THUMBWARS by KAE

Posted by Ashley Weekes in Digital Video -4 day a week - Herman on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at 4:14 pm
The title speaks for itself. Basically, it's me (Ashley) and Evett having a thumbwar. The music makes it more dramatic and I like to think it's a little funnier that way. As the viewer, you can guess who wins the thumbwar. So is it me or Evett? Watch the video and find out, enjoy!

P.S If you watch SNL notice how we stole the intro to our skit from "SNL's digital shorts." I couldn't help it, I a huge fan!

The Last Pencil (Parody Trailer) by KAE

This is one of our parody trailers called "The Last Pencil." It's about a boy who drops his pencil, literally. It's dramatized though and has an awesome voiceover by Evett Hawks, enjoy. Oh and thanks to Jacob for playing the role of Brad Pitt.

Evett's Corner by KAE

Posted by Ashley Weekes in Digital Video -4 day a week - Herman on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 4:24 am
This is just one of the four skits/parodies that my group and I (Kimme, Evett, & Ashley) made for our end of the year project (the others will be posted soon), a compilation of different skits/parodies. This particular skit, is actually the pilot episode in a mini series called "Evett's Corner." Basically, Evett talks about her life and the interesting things that happen during it, but on this episode, her special guest, Kimme, gets lost and she has to find her. Is Kimmie lost or is she just playing games with Evett? you decide!

P.S KAE stands for Kimme, Ashley, and Evett just in case you were wondering, enjoy!

Australia: Healthcare and Education

Posted by Ashley Weekes in Globalization - Laufenberg on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 12:59 pm
A Day in the life of and Australian Child (12yrs)

I believe that the life of a 12 year old in Australia compared to that of my life in as a 12 year old in the U.S may differ based on socio-economic backgrounds. The public schooling in Australia compared to the U.S is very good. I mean Australia seems to have a structured and fundamental way of going through education for all there young, while the education in the US as far as public schooling is kind of a jigsaw puzzle. There are some perks, to the schooling that one may receive in the U.S depending on where they're living or what neighborhood they live in, but overall Australia seems to have a more cohesive way about education and learning for there young throughout life.

Reflection

The two regions I had were South America and Middle East & N. Africa. From my current region I chose Kuwait as the country I would research from the Middle East and N. Africa region and I chose Colombia as the country I would research from South America, my old region. Kuwait is a small country bordered by countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran. Kuwait is a very rich country that is a large producer of oil. Colombia is bordered by the Carribean bay. It had environmental problems with deforestation, but for the most part is a resource rich country.

Before I began my project I mapped out an outline in order to give my approach to this task some structure. I researched each of the five point frameworks for my countries first, recordered my resources and then I began brainstorming the different types of mediums I could use to present my information. I decided to make a website and from there began adding information and pictures to my website to make it center around the five point framework for each country.

Assessing each country for the five point framework was fairly easy, but it was difficult in a sense because while their were some detailed explanations in the book as to what the five point framework meant, I didn’t really understand the rating scale to well because I figured there were so many other outside variable shat could contribute to the climate or environment being the way it is.

I would add a “home” or “introductory page” about the two countries to give the reader/audience some background information about the two countries. I think it also would of been nice if I combined two mediums, if I pt up some articles or footage about the countries to entice the reader and give them more information.

I think this project was interesting , I think it could have been a little more fun or interesting for the student if we were given more ways to present this piece and focused more on the collapse of different societies from the past. Maybe create our own countries and determine whether they’ll collapse or not based on the five point framework.

Ashley Weekes, Q2, Artist Statement

Posted by Ashley Weekes in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 10:08 pm
Originally I was suppose to work with recycled items to develop a work of art, instead I tried my hand at a skill that I've been working on for awhile, which is drawing. I've been frequently taking art classes on Saturday so I recreated some pieces and tried to improve some. Mainly my focus for my this art project was to build on skill that I've been developing. I worked with charcoal, pencil, pastels and toned paper to experiment with the different types of textures and shades to work with when drawing figures or still life.

Some of my drawings are recognizable as some of disney's famous characters. These are just some sketches in my book that I've been working on to give my hand practice at drawing different characters. I know the creativeness isn't necessarily there mimicking a picture, but I find it great practice when it comes to drawing cartoons. It helps to see the simple shapes in the characters so drawing comes more fluently when trying to draw what you see.

In my art classes we had nude models so there are two unfinished figure drawings where I worked with charcoal and shading in the dark spaces. When figure drawing it came natural because my hand has become accustomed to drawing the shape within a figure itself, in trying to give the drawing dimension I had to focus on lighting and the gray scale to make the figure pop.

I worked with pastels for the first time drawing a pitcher, a wine bottle and some squashes I didn't get very far in my design, but I've very pleased with what I have so far. This was very different from using charcoal because black wasn't the only highlight color to make the objects pop out, we had blues for yellows and oranges to figures stand out.

My 2nd quarter project was a simple back to the basics of drawing, with few sketches, and side experiments. The practice will do me well in the future for our third quarter assignments.

"Extinction Happens!"

Posted by Ashley Weekes in Science and Society - Best on Friday, November 12, 2010 at 11:36 am

What does it mean for the process of evolution when a species becomes extinct?

The process of evolution depends greatly on the environment itself. While evolution is the change in a species over time, natural selection is the primary mechanism of change for evolution to occur. When natural selection happens, it determines what organisms are best adapted to the environment in order to survive and reproduce, passing on traits to the next generation. The organisms that pass off those traits withhold genes that are “fit” to comprise the next generation. The environment influences the genetic characteristics of an organism’s population, which changes over time.

Evolution can have three outcomes. The species can survive successfully in the environment and live on for a long time, undergoing few changes. In the second case natural selection may induce speciation, changing the older species into a new one or the third case in which, disruptive selection can occur. “A sudden shift in the environment such as a loss of habitat, a species may not been able to live long enough to reproduce. If this happens, then the species will become extinct, will die and be loss from Earth's future forever.” - Dr. Smith, from the University of San Diego

Ultimately, I’ve concluded that for the process of evolution, extinction is result of the cycle (of evolution) that is not suppose to happen. The primary goal of evolution of is to invoke change in a species so it is able to survive over time and when disruptive selection occurs the species may have a difficult time doing that, which can result in extinction. While extinction occurs in some species, I believe it is also a natural part of the evolution process that just happens. We always hear on the news about animals going extinct and how we should save the polar bears and what not, which makes sense. If there is something about the environment that humans are doing that is contributing to the extinction of these animals then it’s not natural, we should try to save the species. However, if a meteorite comes out of sky destroying all living things that’s just evolutions way of saying “Extinction Happens!” if you catch my drift. Either that or the gods are just really angry at us.

Ashley Weekes Q1

Posted by Ashley Weekes in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 9:30 pm
In art class we were assigned an art project in which we had to create something using recycled materials. We were given several examples to guide us into the project and help with brainstorming. When I was beginning to brainstorm for this project, my original idea was to create a lamp shade using old detergent containers. I was going to melt down the containers for the mend together maybe even tint them a bit to get a different color for the light shade. My goal for this project was to ultimately create something that I would be able to use over and over again, something that would be easy to make again for family or friends.

Ultimately, that idea became difficult to create. There were so many other aspects to the project that would of taken awhile longer to make. The electronic part of it, attaching a light bulb with a harnest for the light to hang from was becoming to be difficult so I decided to brainstorm for another project. I lost a lot of artistic value in the project I originally brainstormed for, the replacement project  I came up with was less artistic. Due to timing and such I had to come up with a replacement project and since I put so much thought into my original project that most of my timing was lost for the replacement project.

The idea for my new project came from my recent birthday. I received a lot of balloons for birthday and I figured its very often we receive balloons for holidays and we don't know what to do with them so we throw them away. I figured I could reuse them, probably not in the most artistic way, but I decided to use them as book covers.

I started by deflating the balloons and cutting around the edges. The after I had the balloon opened half way, I placed a book on the deflated balloon a sized it out to match borders of the book, so it fit it neatly. I'm still trying to figure out more creative ways to use recycled art. I've found some cool interesting things online and my peers have also been doing cool and exciting things with recycled art.

Bottle Caps Poster

Art Poster

For my bottle caps poster I thought it would be nice to look at the aquatic life's perspective of bottle caps being thrown in the ocean and how it's directly influencing them. The design of the poster was to convey sight that sort of shocking or gross to get people's attention. The wording plays a huge part in the message of this poster. The problem being that people "throw" their bottle caps tells the reader to throw the bottle caps in a place where it won't cause harm to the aquatic life in the ocean.
