For our final quarter of art we started by traveling to the Rodin museum and sketching. I chose to sketch the thinker, I positioned myself behind him because I wanted to challenge myself and try to capture the his angles with charcoal. 
For the next weeks I tried to do something different each week, starting with charcoal, then transitioning to paint, then watercolor and lastly with a marker.

Lie Detection

The use of fMRIs in a court of law as evidence, replacing the polygraph machine. They would be used to “prove” if a defendant is lying or telling the truth. Though scientists may understand the advanced technology of an fMRI, jurors certainly don’t, and the major worry is that the science will completely replace the law. With jurors basing their decisions based entirely off of the science, when it can be easily manipulated.

Polygraph testimony should excluded from court cases because it is unreliable, the technology is no better than the polygraph machine; it is one more subjective piece of information that informs decision making. Neuroscientists are worried about over-reliance on this technology, when you’re anxious there is all sorts of brain activity from the situation you are in. If you are innocent and you're being asked about the thing you're suspected of, you're going to be just as anxious as you are if you’re guilty of it.

Law is not going to disappear because of neuroscience. Getting a better handle on what brain machinery causes certain behaviors will change the criminal justice system, but it will not disappear. Neuroscience evidence of mental state may ultimately be admitted in trials, but it will not restrict the roles of judges and juries to reading brain scans.

When imaging is used to demonstrate damage to a victim's nervous system, a judge can expect that most evidence will be based on conventional clinical procedures. In cases involving victims, conventional CT scanning has dominated as the preferred diagnostic method. Less frequently, conventional X-rays, diagnostic MRI scans, electroencephalography and SPECT scanning of brain blood perfusion are used

The real question is how can neuroscientists present fMRI evidence in a court of law accurately and clearly enough that it can’t be interpreted in any other way. It requires a deeper understand of the neurology, one we don’t necessarily have.

Amelia Stuart - Five Minutes of Science - Footbinding

The act of binding the feet from an early age (5-7)  so that the foot would essentially fold in half.
said to be inspired by a tenth century dancer in the Emperor's court who “bound her feet in the shape of a new moon” It gradually became a status symbol among the upper class and eventually became a rite of passage for all women.
All the toes (except the big toe) are folded back and bound flat across the sole of the foot (making a triangle shape). The girls were forced to walk either back and forth in their rooms or long distances with their feet like this so that the toes and arches would break. Over time the wrappings and shoes became tighter and smaller as the toes and heel were pulled together.  
The “ideal” length of a bound foot was 3 inches and a woman’s marriage prospects almost entirely depended on the size of her foot. Represented the height of female refinement and foot size became a form of currency and a means of achieving upward mobility Despite the pain, millions of Chinese woman stood by their devotion to the tradition. People became blind to the torture that they were inflicting on their daughters; no doubt the effect of centuries of foot-binding becoming a form of social status.

Amelia Stuart Capstone

For my capstone I made a website about SLA’s spring break service trip to the Dominican Republic. I started by writing blog posts documenting each day of service we had; I wrote about what we did, what I saw, the people we met, and how it made me think about the contrast of my life compared to theirs. I collected photos from other people who went on the trip, and along with the photos that are throughout the website, I created a photo gallery that shows more of what we observed in the different communities.

Something really important to me was to include a page on the Dominican immigration crisis, and a page dedicated to preparing future students going on these trips. For the page on the migration crisis I wrote a short paragraph detailing what happened in the Dominican government, and how it affected the descendants of undocumented Haitian immigrants.  For the page dedicated to preparing future students I included three sections: Fundraising, Packing, and What to Expect. I wanted to help students get a better idea of how to fundraise for these types of programs, how to pack, and what to expect. Because they’re all things that I really needed more information on.

I hope that this can be a continuous project, and that students who go on trips like these in the future will add their own trip onto the website. I think that would be a really cool legacy for service trips at SLA, as well as a resource for kids who can’t go on these trips. One of the main reasons I wanted to do this website was so that people could see what I experienced through my own words.

How to Lie with Statistics Podcast #1

The members present for this podcast were Javier, Gina, Amelia, and Naomi. The discussion was dominated by two salient points: that the cases used to explain statistics were relatively simple and that it is fairly easy to manipulate information. These two driving objectives turned out to be intimidating realizations for the four of us due to the mass media consumption that takes place in this day and age. An example of what was discussed that was easily manipulable and yet simple was data graphs. If one were to zoom in on a graph it can change how the information looks. The whole group thought that was weird. The group also spent a lot of time on what an average was and how there are different types of averages. Lastly, the group was on agreement with everything that was discussed including the over length of the novel.

artist's statement and blog: Amelia Stuart

Week 2: For the abstact painting, I simply dotted a canvas with different colors and called it abstract. My technique for the dots was very specific, I gently pressed the paint against the cabinet, watching the color expand over the white surface, and I pulled the color along, then the hardest part, I carefully yet quickly ficked my wrist, leaving a perfect tail behind. Each dot took approximently 5 minutes.

Week 3/4: I chose three mandalas that made my heart sing. The calm I feel when I fill in each outlined space is indescribable. I reached such a zen feeling as I colored, I became copletely unaware of the time and the worries of my day. 

Week 4/5: I wanted to create a portrait of myself, without actually showing my face. So I drew a young girl, weirding a bold, beautiful dress, but still nervous and uneasy. Which I feel is representative of my self character. 

Week 6/7: I used charcoal to create this piece. It got my hands really dirty and was hard to control. I usually like charcoal, but when I don't have to be inside the lines. I dont reccomend charcoal.  

Week 8/9: I made a dog, and showed my process of making said dog from shapes.

Week 10: I made a raccoon, he looks like a Sal. I made a raccoon cause I think they're cool and weird. I started it as a pencil drawing, but put charcoal on top of it. Because the pencil was giving me the fur-like look, the charcoal made it look a lot better.

Art Blog 2

For my collage I wanted to use different clippings from magazines to create a gown. I was going to have the body just be drawn on, but then I came across an old magazine about bones and I used cut outs from it to create a skeleton for the body. 
I really enjoyed learning how to draw fabrics, I didn't make one main drawing, I drew many different styles originally as practice, but I didn't want to make one main drawing because I didn't feel confident enough to make something that large when I was still learning
For the photo I took a picture of a bush I came across while walking home from a class, I thought that the snow on the leaves, and the depth would have a strong effect. 
For my illustration I decided to do a book cover for the book I'm reading now. Pride and Prejudice. The girl in the picture is the main character: Elizabeth Bennet. I wanted to capture her facial expression; in the book Elizabeth is very prejudice (hense the title) and I wanted her face to look as if it was judging the person looking back.

He looked up, his wet and grimy face. Yes I am, he said. I am the one.

This is a scene I imagine was cut before the final publication of The Road on page 259, continuing from the above statement.


I worry about where we’re going, what will happen to us, the ones who eat people.

The boy held his gaze

Where are we going Papa?

We’re going south

What’s in the south Papa?

I wish I was dead

The man came to life and grabbed his son by his shoulders and shook him hard

Don’t say that!

Why not? Mama’s over there, we won’t be hungry, we won’t be scared.

We’re carrying the fire

You killed that man.

I didn’t kill him

You took everything from him

He stole from us!

He didn’t steal clothes off our backs. What is the point of carrying the fire if you only carry it for yourself?

He looked down at the boy, his shoulders lifting heavily with every breath.

He was a bad guy

Everyone isn’t a bad guy! If we were really good guys we would help people. We wouldn’t take everything from people. If you had found blankets and food would you have just left it there?

He knelt to a squatting position and rubbed his legs.

No

Then how is he worse than us?

He rose until he met the boy’s eyeline and looked into his eyes.

What if I promise to pass the fire onto the people we meet, as long as they’re not cannibals?

I want you to do it because it’s what’s right

Okay. We share the fire. And if they’re bad

you’ve gotta take a shot.

For my creative piece, I wanted to use my own opinions and feelings about the book, and speak to the man through the boy. Early on in the book I wondered about the man’s motivation to “go south” but I’ve wondered more about why he insists they keep moving forward. It didn’t make sense to me. I had the feeling that the man was not keeping his son’s best interest in mind, and that he was making both their lives worse by continuing their journey.

The result of these thoughts made me angry at the man, for keeping his son starving and terrified, for this assignment I had the boy confront the man. Because I felt that the boy has always been smart and that he had these thoughts too. I placed my passage just before they went back and returned the clothes to the thief on page 259 because I felt that since the boy was already angry and was bottling his emotions, it would be a good place for him to empty out his feelings towards his father.

I had the boy introduce a new argument; sharing the fire, and how his father doesn’t share the fire with others.  I was able to bring back some of my original idea when the boy says, “what’s the point of carrying the fire if you only carry it for yourself?” This goes back to the theme of morals, and how the boy has more than his father; his father tells him that they are the good guys and that they’re carrying the fire, but the boy doesn’t understand how they can be the good guys if they don’t help others and share the fire.

I added in small descriptors throughout the dialogue. Something I wanted to focus on was the idea of the man “looking down” at the boy, this was a phrase I used when they first started talking. As the scene goes on and the man beings to understand the boy I described the man standing up as if to look back down at the boy, but instead he meets the boy at his eyeline. I put this in to define the transition from father and son to equals, I think that the boy’s speech would have made the man see how smart the boy was, that he was learning from the boy.

For my ceiling tile I wanted to start with something simple, but still meant a lot to me. I chose the crown chakra because it's the chakra that I find the most complex and interesting, and also what I connect with the most. Meditating has been something very important to me for awhile, and I'm happy that I'm able to have the connection to the universe and symbol for a larger scheme of life in SLA.

For my drawing, I actually made several smaller drawings. I am a dancer, and love the way that dancers can manipulate their bodies to do seemingly impossible movements. I drew inspiration from Misty Copeland, the first black principle dancer with the American Ballet Theater. Instead of drawing these dancers with hair, facial features, and clothing, I wanted to focus all attention on the body positioning. I didn't want anything to distract from the base of what dance is. 

I'm a huge lover of Alice and Wonderland, especially the Cheshire Cat. I definitely wanted to go to Wonderland as a child. (maybe I still do) I was very disappointed that my pumpkin was ruined before I could get a photo of it, because it was very fun and mystical with a candle inside. Unfortunately, the pumpkin was rotten, and was composted without my knowledge.

I tried to model my self portrait after a photo of myself from two years ago. I had a little bit of trouble with the shading, and making it look how I wanted it. I try not to get discouraged, I'm still learning, and I'm very proud of the self portrait I did create.

Changing World Essay

Analytical Essay:


Friendship is a mutual bond between two or more people, a stronger form of an interpersonal bond than an association (Wikipedia). Such a dry definition does not give the concept of friendship justice. Friendship is putting someone else first, and it is not a large theme in The Yellow Birds. The relationship between the two main characters, Bartle and Murph is not one of close friendship. It is difficult to define their relationship. The main reason that Bartle concerns himself with Murph at all is because of a promise that he made to Murph’s mother, he promised her he would look out for her son, and bring him home from the war. Despite the fact that they were almost complete strangers. Still, he felt obligated to keep his promise, regardless of the fact that he despises keeping it. Bartle spends a fair amount of time thinking about how much he doesn’t want to be responsible for Murph. After Murph dies, Bartle looks back on the moments that he didn’t comfort Murph, or ignored his behavior, and wonders that if he had comforted and consoled him, could there have been a chance that he could’ve saved him? Reliving each moment and thinking of different scenarios is what caused Bartle to become so depressed after he was discharged, but the root of it was that he did not keep his promise.  

Although it feels like a memoir when reading it, all of the characters are fictional and the story is fictional. Author Kevin Powers enlisted in the army when he was seventeen years old, he fought in Iraq as a machine gunner assigned to an engineer unit. "I think I had to come to terms with my own experience before I was able to contend with it in writing," Powers said in an interview with The Guardian. The Yellow Birds is Powers’s answer to the wider question of "what it was like over there.” He set out, he says, with the aim of "seeing if it would be possible to paint a portrait of the war looking out from inside of this one soldier" (The Guardian) The focus of the book, very personal, going back and forth between the war, and Bartle’s life after in Virginia, he switches, sometimes mid-sentence, between the two places.

“The root of his guilt is that he wanted to be good, and he tried to be good, but he failed. His conflict is between his desire to redeem that failure and his acceptance of complete powerlessness.” (Kevin Powers) This is about where all of  Bartle’s guilt really comes from, he does feel guilt from Murph’s death, and from his survival, but the root of it all is the fact that Barle never actually kept his promise to watch out for Murph, and bring him home.

As more and more children come into the world screens and keyboards are thrust into their hands. It is familiar to them because they see their friends or their parents using them. Something else to consider is social media and the effect it has on teenagers lives, as they open their laptops and close their doors.  Today's young people are growing up disconnected from nature by spending so much time in front of a screen, therefore in the future they will value the natural world less than any prior generation.

There are multiple opinions on this topic, some supporting the idea of active technology in childrens lives, others saying it is time to limit the time we spend glued to the glowing screens. It is not hard to find a child on the couch watching a movie instead of running outside and enjoying the fresh air. The neglection of nature will follow them into their adults lives, and impact how they will see the world compared to their parents or grandparents. They will value nature less in their adult lives, and these are our future politicians, business owners, teachers.

A study done by a New York University found that 55% of 12 year olds were registered on Facebook , while a survey of children in Britain concluded at 34%. Another study was done by The Kaiser Foundation, a US welfare institute, the study found that children as young as eight spend an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes on the screen every day.  The distraction implicated by social media and television are majorly involved in the disconnection from nature, for everyone, not just children.

Adults are using their screens for everyday activities mainly their jobs, however it is not just children who are becoming disconnected. In fact it is not right to blame children for the large presence of technology in their lives, children see their parents texting during dinner or spending nights in front of the television they’re going to do the same.

Some schools are to give out laptops, others give out iPads, and smartboards replace chalkboards. This is not a bad thing, in fact it could make the lives of teachers easier, but if students are spending so much of their free time and their school or work time what happens when the screen is taken away? The Pali institute, an outdoor education camp for public school children and Children's Digital Media Center @LA at UCLA found a group of approximately 100 6th graders over a period of five days. They all had absolutely no access to screens of any kind. The study found that children's skills in reading the emotion in other childrens faces got dramatically better. The time they spent interacting in groups, with their peers and counselors, made an important difference. The kids at the camp improved their understanding of emotion, they were able to spend five days without technology.

Although children might not think that conserving nature matters much, their influence goes beyond watching the nature channel on TV to leading a litter pick up in their neighborhood.  Since they are young they need to be pushed by their parents to get off the couch and spend more time outside, ultimately going on to helping their neighborhood become more appreciative of nature. It is much easier to sit on the couch and spend two hours catching up on shows than it is to spend two hours picking up apple cores, however everyone, of all ages should try to spend at least two hours outside. Not necessarily picking up trash, but reading a book, drawing, or just sitting and appreciating the view.

Inquiry: I wanted to know which filter would be the most effective on the river water

Research: I got information by researching on the internet and looking at other experiments

Collaboration: I worked with my team to complete the filters

Presentation: What was effective was that we used different materials for each filter and when we put the water through the filter we remained patient

Reflection: I would want to try more combinations to find the most effective

Final Blog Post

Creativity is Necessary in order to gain a Unique Perspective on History




In world history this year, I thought we would learn about about a new topic every quarter, turns out we would learn about a new topic almost every week. From Religion to Revolution to Colonization we were always reading articles, watching videos, or doing worksheets. We gained a unique perspective on past events and current events through research and inquiry. I found myself in a difficult position during trials and roleplays, I had to abandon my personal opinion and become an entirely different person during the French/ Haitian Revolution Roleplay.

“Slaves cannot be free. Slaves are.... slaves. They’ve been slaves since before I was born. They think that they can... what? Live in society like the rest of us? They’d never be accepted, the only job they would get would be working as a servant. Which is what they are already! What would they do if they didn’t have us? We give them a purpose to be here! We give them jobs and food and a place to sleep. If they fight, they’ll no longer have the things they need to survive in life.” For the rest of my responses click here

It was very hard for me to write this, in the beginning. I didn’t like being that person, but after I started writing I thought to myself ‘what would a privileged, naive women during the French Revolution sound like?’ and the ideas just started flowing. This is one example of being put out of my comfort zone, and instead of seeing things from my own perspective, I was seeing things from multiple peoples perspective. Which ultimately provided the unique perspective I mentioned before.  

I think that the creativity required for this class was something that was not essentially talked about, but was something that was required in order to gain an understanding for the class. Almost every day we wrote a response to a quote or how we felt about a certain topic, and with every journal our minds grew. Another example is during the Cortes trial, we had to put aside our personal opinions and work hard to defend our given group. For my reflection on the trial click here.

Sometimes we were given the opportunity to really explore our creative sides and write plays, poetry, letters, we went on our own and created these things. Revolution Benchmark

In this unit we covered numerous topics on Revolutions, first focusing more on the French Revolution. We got a perspective on what it would be like to be in the Revolution with the role-play and were challenged to think like the characters assigned to us, despite our personal opinions. After the French Revolution we focused more on modern Revolutions (Venezuela, Arab Springs, Ukraine) and we were able to do our own research. Throughout the unit I learned numerous things, not just about revolutions that happened or are happening now.  I learned about what makes a revolution, and how to carry through a successful Revolution.

For instance, taking advantage of the internet, getting lots of people involved but have a small group for people who are more involved. One of the larger things I learned was to approach with peace, although violence is a way to show your feelings, it just causes more injury and death. When people are approached with peace they don’t feel threatened, and they are more open to the idea of negotiation.

World History- Pipeline Project

This unit we learned about not only the keystone pipeline, but a more broader idea of environmental issues in the U.S. and other countries. I feel I have learned more about the government's participation in the environmental problems. Based on the movies we’ve watched and the discussions we’ve had I think that the government has forgotten its role. They keystone pipeline has many pros and cons, there are environmental problems involved with building the pipeline but it has numerous economic values. TransCanada is prepping for the building of the pipeline but can not be built until the President makes his decision.   


  • The proposed 1,700-mile Keystone XL pipeline would transport up to 35 million gallons of oil every day


  • The oil company they are using is called tar sands and its one of the dirtiest energy sources in the world.

  • The U.S. State Department is currently considering a proposal to build Keystone XL.

  • An existing pipeline

  • called Keystone 1 has already leaked 14 times since it started operating in June 2010, including one event that dumped 21,000 gallons of tar-sands crude.

  • The pipeline would cross rivers, streams, wetlands and wild areas that are home to at least many rare and endangered species

Are we on? Great, yeah it’s great to be here thanks for inviting me. Introduce myself? yeah my name is Dallas Gray I am working with TransCanada and I live here in the great state of Texas. Right Right, The Keystone XL pipeline is an expansion on the original pipeline and hopefully soon we will be building from Hardisty Canada to Steel City in Nebraska. I’m here to answer any questions or concerns that the public has and reassure them that we take pipeline safety very seriously. Great question, TransCanada is very committed to minimizing the environmental impact along the proposed route. In fact if you look at some photos then you’ll see that the before and after of the pipeline looks identical, I can hardly tell theres a pipe down there. The impact underneath the ground? Well, our workers are very experienced and they do there best to plan and in order to avoid impacts to the environment. Yeah next question? Jobs! This is always the best part, it just makes me so happy to say that we will need about 20,000 skilled American workers to help us build the pipeline. This project will provide jobs for welders, mechanics, electricians, pipe fitters, laborers, safety coordinators, heavy equipment operators, and other workers rely on large construction projects for their livelihoods. Amazing right? What? What happens when the pipeline is built? Could you uh, emphasize on that, I’m not sure I understand. Oh, what happens to all the jobs? Well, we will need people regularly to make sure the pipeline is in perfect condition. So yeah, yeah some people will lose their jobs. I-I mean, most won't but some will. N-Next question? If the oil strikes groundwater then m-movement of oil and any contamination that  c-could enter groundwater would be very slow and limited, likely to hundreds of feet at most, even in sandy soils. A-Are we done here because I-I have to go, can you please turn the camera off?

Hey man, what’s going on? why you got that camera? What? Answer some questions? yeah sure man I got you. Well uh, I’m here today protesting the building of the keystone pipeline. I think it’s stupid! They want to put a tube of toxic waste through this country! and our government is actually considering giving them a permit. Last time I checked that wasn't their job, their job is to protect the people, thats not what they're doing! We need to fight back against TransCanada because no one else is going to! Thats why were all out here today, to fight back and get our message across. Yeah, some people have been arrested but the crazy part is that they aren't fighting it, they’re taking it which is just so awesome and they’re just so involved! Well, my buddy’s girlfriends mother lives around here and he and I came out to see her and we passed a protest so when we got to her moms house we asked about and we became super interested so we’ve started researching the pipeline and we realized exactly  what I told you earlier, the governments job is to protect the people of America and if a permit is given then its gonna screw everything up! So now I go to protests whenever we can, We even organize some, like uh, there was one last week that we organized and we got like 30 people it was awesome. Well, I think that we need to get this story out there, because if people really knew what was going on then they sure would support us! Like, we’re trying to start this thing where we like, tweet at celebrities and try to get them to I don’t know,  maybe get them to like address the pipeline. Then their fans would support us too.   (Women is sitting on swinging bench) Hello its nice to meet you, thank you for asking me to participate in your film. Yes, I am Natomah Robbins I live here in Nebraska and unfortunately my home is located right where a part of this pipeline could be built. Yes, yes I have two daughters and three sons, my-my husband passed away eight years ago. I live with my daughter her husband, and their three children. Well, I think that this pipeline is a bad idea. Because its transporting dirty oils through our land,  the land where some of us grow crops. Right, I understand but what if ten years go by and a crack appears. It will either go up to our crops or down to ground water.  People have already destroyed so many beautiful places, why do they feel the need to take away more homes? Yes, I am angry. At the government, because its their job to look out for the people of America. Thats not what their doing, they care more about money than we people. No one seems to understand that this isn’t our world, we were placed here. And if they keep pouring their toxic waste everywhere they will destroy their home, and no matter how much money they pool together. They can’t buy another earth, we will all be dead bodies floating around in space. And if they keep polluting everywhere, water levels will rise. Half of Manhattan would be covered in water, then they couldn’t go to their fancy office jobs because they’d be underwater! (laughs) yes I-I have done my research. This was all my husband could talk about when he was alive, there was always something wrong and he was always coming up with ideas to fix them. Actually my son works with a small environmental company and he listens to my opinions and we come up with ideas together, so yes I am still involved. The protests? Well, I think they're a good idea, I mean people are becoming more aware. But I just don’t know, I believe some people don’t take us seriously. (Camera cuts off)

Independent Reading: Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen

Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen

Sarah Dessen is #1 on the New York Times Bestselling Author, School Library Journal Best Book of the Year, 1998, A YALSA Best Book for Young Adults, 1999, New York Public Library Book for the Teenage, 2001, and Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist, 2003. She has written many books two of which I have already read. All her books focus on teenage girls and she usually will tie in different characters that have a small role in one book, but a large role in another. The book I chose Keeping the Moon was published September 1st, 1999 it was her third novel she now has ten books, one novella, and the current book she is writing. In 2003 the film how to deal with Mandy Moore was based off of Someone like you and That summer both written by Sarah Dessen.

Keeping the Moon, also released as Last Chance is about fifteen year old Nicole Sparks or Colie. This books narrates her summer that she spends her Aunt Mira in fictional Colby,a small beach town presumably in North Carolina. Each Sarah Dessen book has some sort of theme, some are simple and some can be more complex. This book is a very simple theme, friendship, a theme that evolves to be very complex. Colie was once overweight so was her mother, however her mother started aerobics and they both became very skinny, Colie evolving into a small case of anorexia.

When she arrives in Colbie she is very hesitant to make friends, she always had been however when she starts work at The Last Chance burger joint she makes new friends.

Her main best friends are two girls who have graduated from high school, it is never made clear how old they are however. Morgan is very tall and very welcoming of Colie, Isabel however is very rude and difficult towards Colie. The two only become friends when Isabel meets one of Colie’s arch enemies, who calls her a slut and a bitch.

Norman is the young man, probably seventeen or sixteen who lives in Aunt Mira’s basement, he is the cook at the Last Chance and takes an interest in Colie, the two start out as friends but become involved near the end.

Aunt Mira is very eccentric and reminds Colie of who she used to be, more of what she and her mother used to look like. Colie is somewhat afraid of Mira in the beginning but the two become good friends while talking. Colie learns that Mira’s life is very difficult, she is made fun of all over Colby but when Colie confronts Mira with this, she learns how strong Mira is.

My final view on this book is that Sarah Dessen finds a unique way to catch attention of young adults and enrich their minds. I love Sarah Dessen books and want to continue reading her novels because her style of writing really catches my eye.

La casa de Michelle

La casa esta en Nueva York cerca de Parque de Central, lejos de las montañas y la playa. Es muy grande y moderno, la casa es para nuestra amiga Michelle Friedman y su familia. La casa tiene tres habitaciones, una cocina, tres baños, un comedor, un jardín, y una sala. Michelle tiene tres niños, dos niños comparten una habitación, el tercer niño es junto a los otros cada habitación está conectado a un cuarto de baño. La familia vive en los dos últimos pisos de uno beacon court


La Sala:


La sala tiene tres sofás, una mesa, y muchos cuadros en las paredes.

YATW Blog Post #3

For the final post of this year, not only did I have to research my issue on Bullying, but I had to go out into the world an address the issue to someone, or a group of people this was called an Agent of Change. I knew from the beginning I would teach a younger group of kids about the affects of bullying, when the time came I just needed to find the right group of kids. I had been in regular contact with my former principal at AIM Academy and when I told him about the project and my idea he replied saying that it could be possible for me to teach there. He gave the email of the lower school principal and told her about my idea. I didn’t have a backup plan so when I had no response I began to worry and try to think up new ideas, luckily I got a response a few days later saying I would be presenting the the fourth grade class.

When I arrived in the classroom I had time to set up and by the time the students arrived they were very excited. Some students didn’t want to talk about their feelings towards bullying and wanted more to play games and goof off, but some students were happy to talk about their experiences and their feeling towards bullying. However I came prepared, being a former student there I know that the kids can’t simply learn from a presentation, so I started a few activities with them. They first activity one that I thought was clever, one student was asked to squeeze some toothpaste onto a strip of tape, when they finished I asked the student Jamie, to put the toothpaste back into the bottle. It was pretty funny because Jamie really tried to put the paste back into the bottle, after a few tries I asked her what the significance of squeezing toothpaste onto tape was.  She didn’t know, so I explained the purpose of this is to show how you can say something mean very easily, but its much harder to take back whatever you said, however you can clean up the mess. At that point I stripped off the tape from the table and threw it in the trash, the students were amused.


The next activity was called Wrinkled Wanda, the students drew “Wanda” onto paper and wrote mean things to say to someone, after they were done I told them to crumple up their paper. After about five minutes of some serious crumpling, they were done and I told them to open up the paper and put it to the side. Then they took another piece of paper, and drew another “Wanda” however on this paper they wrote nice and sweet things to say to someone, mainly the opposite of the mean things they wrote before. Now they had two “Wanda’s” one nice and the other mean, now they thought that they were done and began goofing off I asked them what the difference was between the two, some said they were opposite categories but one girl, Jamie from my toothpaste activity said that one was wrinkled and the other wasn’t so, I told the students to try and get the wrinkles out to make it look like the nice one. They tried very hard but they couldn’t get the wrinkles out and the lesson was pretty self explanatory, you can try but every mean thing you say to someone or mean thing you do to someone, leaves a wrinkle and you can try to smooth them out, but it never goes away until you say you’re sorry.

The final activity wasn’t a drawing activity it was a writing activity but I thought it would be a good way to end the class. The students got a small survey with simple instructions, you had to write examples of times you were a good friend, or a time when you were brave. The second part was to give examples of people who loved you or a time when you made a good decision. I worked with to kids, Jamie first she was having trouble thinking of examples and also writing her answers down. Since the school is a place for children with learning disabilities including dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADD, and ADHD, teachers and guest teachers are allowed to write for them. So I wrote down Jamie’s answers for her, when she was done she was very eager to show her teacher and I began working with the boy who sits next to her Christopher, he was having a lot of trouble thinking up ideas so I worked with him and he came up with his answers, all of them.

At the end of the class some kids found the lesson to be a time to goof off with their friends, but other students like Jamie and Christopher found the class to be fun and it seemed like the two of them really needed a class like this, to understand what bullying is, and how they can prevent bullying. I found the experience of teaching a group of children very exciting, I’m not saying it was easy but I loved watching their faces express when I talked about something or someone explained an experience with bullying.

Macbeth Creative Benchmark

This project is all about finding Macbeth's transition from loyal, dedicated lord to a cold blooded murderer in different songs.

    

  What was your process like in crafting the creative portion of this project?

I put a lot of work into this project, finding the songs, then taking them apart and piecing them to fit my thesis. Sometimes it was easy, and sometimes it was really difficult, there were times when I would get distracted and watch some TV or talk to my friends, but when i came back my mind was fresh and I was able to get the work done.


     What difficulties did you encounter in doing this project? How did you overcome them?

The main difficulty I had was probably picking what I would do, I had the idea of trees and grass, really connecting to nature and his growth. However I didn’t have time to get to the store, so instead of going at six-o'clock on a Saturday and staying up all night to finish it, I told myself I would spend Sunday working on it. Unfortunately I work on Sunday’s, from 10-12 I figured I would do it in the afternoon. Little did I know there was a meeting that many parents were going to, so I stayed until three watching their kids. When I got home I did thorough thinking, I didn’t think it was rational to go at 4 and work on it for about 4 hours then do the rest of my homework. I decided on a soundtrack because I’m good at working stories into music.

      What are you most proud of in this project?

I’m proud of all of I guess, it wasn’t what I really wanted to do, but I think I did a good job and worked very hard on it. I’m proud of my final product because I honestly thought that I wouldn’t have anything, so I’m glad I’ve brought something in not only thats good, but something that I like. I don’t love it, there are some improvements that should be done, but i think I gave it my best and the final product may not look like I put work into it, but I did, and I think I did my best

      What would you change/do differently if given the chance?

Time- Management. Thats something I really, really, really, need to work on.

      What did you learn from your colleagues' presentations/projects?

That they all did really good projects and put time into them, I also learned that some of my classmates have secret talents. I had no idea Des could draw, I thought he was all running, but it turns out he is crazy good!

      What did you learn about yourself as a result of doing this project?

That I need to manage my time more, and work with Ms. Dunn/ Sasha for guidance and not do it all myself.

Hola, Me llama Amelia, tengo catorce años, mi cumpleaños es el dos de mayo.  Soy estudiante de Science Leadership Academy. Es un extraño pero divertida. Esta cerca de The Franklin Institute y The Comcast Center. Hay quinientos estudiantes en la escuela, y cinco piso planta. Tenemos equipos de correr y  un equipo de fútbol. También tenemos muchos trabajadores buenos  y mucho y el equipo tiene mucho espíritu. Participio en el equipo correr porque es divertido y difícil al mismo tiempo. 


Yo tengo cinco clases principales en Science Leadership Academy. Inglés, Álgebra, Español, Bioquímica, y Historia. Mis favoritos es Historia y Ingles porque son divertidos y interesante también difícil. No me gusta mucho Álgebra porque son dificil y aburrido. Para la Historia necesitas unas hojas de papeles, y los lápices en la clase de Historia leemos y participamos mucho. Para la ingles necesitas su libro y los lápices en la clase de Ingles escribimos y leemos mucho. Para tener éxito en este clase de Historia necesita expresar su opinión. Para tener éxito en este clase de Inglés necesita su imaginación. 


El Señor Kay enseñó teatro, profesor estricto, pero la diversión profesor le gusta enseñanza teatro, su clase es divertido en la clase de teatro necestiamos ser respomsable La Señora Dunn es en Inglés profesora es muy diversión y tranquila, profesora le gusta enseñanza Ingels, su clase es divertida, profesora es mi favorita. La Señorita Manuel eseñta espanol profesoras cupleaños en la primavera, le gusta la primavera, profesora le gusta enseñanza espanol, su clase es difícil. La Señora Martín enseña salud y educación física, profesora estricto, pero la diversión profesor le gusta enseñanza salud y educación física, no tengo su clase es mi asesor. 



Me gusta SLA porque es divertida y tranquilo,
pero SLA puede ser difícil. Lo que más me gusta de SLA es la gente, somos muy diversos y diferentes el uno del otro. No me gusta nada que algunas personas crean que queremos ser científicos, porque no todos quieren ser científicos. SLA es un poquito aburrido, pero hace memorias increíbles. Es una escuela muy memorable.

You and the World: Bullying in the USA

In this post I wanted to not talk about the dynamics of bullying but stories from my classmates and my personal story. My story does include bullying but also circles around depression and why it started for me.
The worst of my bullying started in third grade I know third grade doesn’t sound like it could be bad and it was nothing compared to what I would have to deal with in the next few years. Four girls invited me to play with them, I had a blast. The next day when I expected them to play with me again they didn’t. They said that I wasn’t cool enough to play with them, and I was devastated, because I had no friends. That day I had no one to sit with at lunch, so I sat with the girl no one else would sit with because she was a “loser”. She ended up leaving the school after that year because girls were so mean to her, but to this day we are still great friends. I couldn’t believe they had driven away my only true friend.  I felt so alone and sad and in fourth grade my depression began.  In fifth grade I made new friends, they were the best friends I could ask for, they were, kind, thoughtful, and they listened to my problems. It was getting better for me and I was happier. One day after the school play I was walking out  after I had performed when I saw my parents standing by the door, they stopped me and told me I was switching schools next year, to a school that I dreaded.
The next year as soon as we pulled up in the car I said the words I always said “welcome to prison” that year went by and I only had three friends. These girls lived in big houses weren’t very smart and well to say the least they were the complete opposite of me, and by the next year I fell deeper into my depression. That year though, I made some amazing friends, and for the first time in two years I felt happy again, that happiness continued. I was friends with everyone in the school they all knew my name and on top of that I was getting straight A’s.
When eighth grade came around I was flying high out of my dark hole, until the night of October 26th.  That night my dad died. Almost at once I fell back into depression, One day after it happened I went to school. It felt nice to have all my friends hugging me and telling me how much they loved me, but it seemed like there was a black hole inside of me sucking up all the happiness in my life and turning it into depression.  For two weeks I stayed home with my mom, and when I got back to school I was suddenly an outsider. My friends stayed by my side but only about ten stayed as true friends. I feel terrible about it now, but I was pushing away my oldest friends in that school. I was being mean to them, and telling them to leave me alone. I didn't want them in my life, they didn’t understand. I thought my bullying was over, not quite yet. It began again in February when we went on a school trip to Wyoming. It was along the lines of embarrassing me, making fun of my body and continued until the end of the year. It was done by one girl, Hallel Raphael. She tormented me that year, not physical bullying at all but it was very discrete and sometimes it was over the facebook. By the end of that year I was so excited to be leaving, I had amazing times there but also too many bad bad memories.
Bullying is a huge teenage issue that needs to be addressed as a more serious issue across the US. Twenty-two states out of fifty states only have one law passed for either cyber bullying, or cyber harassment.
According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) 4,400 people a year kill themselves due to bullying. Over 14% of high school students have considered suicide and 7% have attempted suicide. According to studies done by Yale University victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to commit suicide than non-victims. Girls from ages 10-14 are more likely to commit suicide due from bullying in their schools. 30% of kids of students are either a bully, or a victim, and 160,000 students are staying home from school from fear of bullies.
If it’s gotten to the fact where students don’t want to go to school, get an education, and have a successful future, they would rather kill themselves. It needs to stop, from me being someone who was bullied and know other girls and boys who are bullied, it’s painful, and everyday more kids are sinking into that black hole of depression.
Some people expect parents to jump in and help, but some kids don’t feel comfortable telling their parents because they are so afraid. Kids need to know that when they are at home they are safe, and if they are being cyber-bullied, tell your parents! They can try and stop the kids who are being cruel, and help their child from killing themselves. If parents don’t know what to do then to start they could remove any violent weapons from their home, and if their child has been cyberbullied then a parent can remove computers from their childs room, or put on passwords and website locks to ensure their safety.

It affected me a lot and made me have low self esteem

I don’t know why i was bullied. they never really told me why

it continued until 7th grade
Are you still haunted by it?-
I am still very haunted by it
How did you get bullied?-
I got bullied by getting dragged across the floor, kicking, punching, called names, and emotionally
Can you describe your self harm?-
My self harm made me feel like i was bigger then the world and I would cut myself with a sharp edge with my nail clipper but it would never bleed through.

Before I Fall Q2 Benchmark Project

Before I Fall

Before I Fall was Lauren Oliver’s first novel, she followed the book with Delirium the first book in a trilogy. The other books in the series include Pandemonium and soon to be published  Requiem. Before I Fall has been thought of as a movie for quite some time, and according to Lauren Oliver’s blog, the film finally has a director and will most likely be released in 2013 or 2014.

The book starts with Samantha Kingston waking up for school on February 12 better known as “Cupid Day” at her school where everyone sends their friends or boyfriend/girlfriend roses. Throughout her daily routine the reader is given snippets of her social life, like the fact that in just a few hours she will lose her virginity to her boyfriend Rob. Two new characters are introduced in the next couple of pages, one is Sam’s best friend Lindsay Edgecombe, the other is Sam’s friend Elody, her third friend Ally comes in later at school. The girls attend school and get their flowers, after school they learn that there is to be a party that night hosted by Kent, a not so popular boy who is in love with Sam. The girls get ready for the party and head over, Sam has the agreement with Rob that they will go to the party and stay for awhile before they leave. At the end of the night Rob becomes completely drunk and falls asleep on the couch, making Sam leave the party with her friends. The girls are driving down the road when it happens, a white flash comes in front of the car and Lindsay screams “shit”, “sight”, or “sit” Sam can’t tell. What she can remember is a horrible sound of metal on metal, the car folding in two. She wakes up the next day, confused to find that it’s February 12th again. This continues for seven days, each day Sam gets closer to finding out why her death happened, who was responsible, and she discovers the true value of everything she is in danger of losing. My favorite character is Izzy Kingston, Sam’s little sister. She is so unaware of social life and doesn’t care what people think of her, I like that, and I wonder why we shed that as we get older. I can’t relate to many of the characters in this story, I can kinda relate to Kent, I’ve sat around and watched people I care about become complete strangers. I’ve watched people I was friends with turn their personality around and become friends with the mean girl.

In my opinion I really liked this book, it was a little predictable but it kept me  going. I wanted to know what would happen to her and all the characters even though I already knew. It was a very unique way of writing a book. I appreciated Lauren Oliver’s view on teenagers and how realistic it was, it had drugs and cheating, but it also had love and friendship. The friendship was what really stood out to me, it showed what it really was, you and your fight sometimes you hate them, but when something happens you see that they care. If I could change one thing, I would change the romance between Sam and Kent, so that it didn’t exist. I think it was sweet but it was so predictable, and I think that they should have become friends not in love. I do recommend this book, it has a nice balance of literature but it can keep a teenager who hates reading involved in the book, and they might enjoy it, and they might not, but at least they will read it and have a good perspective on it.



Creative Portion



For my creative portion I decided to do an Album. I chose five songs that would be perfect for five certain scenes. I used the songs in my itunes account so its limited.



Bruno Mars- The Other Side: I thought this song would be good for a credits scene. The starting line is “Truth is I’m complicated, You’re as straight as they come” I thought this perfectly described Sam and Kent. It also has a good beat and if it was used in movies as a credit song and if I heard it, I would dance!



Cher Lloyd- Oath: I think this song is perfectly describing the friendship of Lindsay and Sam. It could be used in a scene where the girls are in a yogurt shop arguing then when they make up they get into a huge yogurt fight, throwing yogurt and just having the best time. The song also has a nice upbeat tempo but also has a sort of childish ring to it, which I think perfectly describes the scene.  


Coldplay- Fix You: I think this song is perfect for the scene where she has her dream for the last time and when she figures that she had her eyes closed and opens them and finds that she she has been flying the chorus will burst in and will mention guiding you home, igniting bones, and trying to “Fix You” Its a slow song so when that scene does come on it should be in slow motion, but continuing the song she begins flying around and the song is really perfect because it talks about high up above or down below.


Demi Lovato- Catch Me: I think this song is great for when she’s staying in his house and they're just staring at each other, because the song says don’t catch me for most of the song which represents Sam being unsure and how “my stomach screams whenever I look at you” Sam always talks about how nervous she gets around Kent. I think it perfectly fits their love story and what soundtrack doesn’t have a love song.


Bruno Mars- Just The Way You Are: This song is perfect for when she and Izzy are exploring Sam’s old hideout and they’re lying on the rock just watching the clouds and Sam is wondering what Izzy will grow up to be. This song is like Sam singing to Izzy almost telling her not to change and not to end up like her, the mean girl who everyone is afraid of. Basically telling to hang on to her youth because it will be gone in a flash.

All About Me.

​On my slide I chose certain pictures describing myself. I put every school I've gone to on the top part, and my likes on the bottom part. In the center I have what I want to do in order. I have a picture of a gymnast because I used to be a gymast and I would like to start it again. I have someone graduating because I want to graduate. and I have someone working and a family because I want to have a good job a settle down.

I made some changes to my slide, I decided to use the same idea of my previous slide but I made changes to the background images by making them the same color of the background and thats pretty much it.

Soy baja, Tengo morena. Soy bastante sociable pero un poquito timida. Yo hacer linda pero me encanta practicar deportes. ¿Y tú? ¿Cómo eres? En mi casa es con mi familia. Mi hermana es llega a veces. Bullying Across America

​Bullying is a huge issue across American schools, physical bullying does occur however verbal bullying, emotional bullying and cyber bullying are the ones causing the trouble My name is Amelia and for my you and the world project I picked "Bullying Across America" it is a big issue and it needs to be addressed.

About 4,400 people commit suicide every year, half are due to bullying. The question people are asking is “why”, why do they bully? Kids can grow up in abusive households, or be abused throughout their childhood. because they had years of thinking that this behavior was okay, when they get to middle or high school they bully kids.

Kids look up to adults, when they see them abusing a family member or themselves they think it’s okay, it’s not. Of course not all kids begin bullying like that, they may have been bullied when they were younger so now they are getting back at the person who bullied them. In some cases stats prove that some kids are genetically functioned to act as a bully.

In 2010 a boy named Alex Libby was asked to be in a movie, just because he was sitting alone at lunch. He was bullied on the bus for many months and didn’t tell anybody not even his parents. They only found out when the some of the footage was shone of Alex on the bus. I had the pleasure of meeting Alex over summer vacation, he came to my summer camp. I got to hear his whole story from the beginning.

Alex was abused by his birth father, he was eventually adopted by the Libby’s. Most abused children grow up being a bully, but Alex was the opposite he was strangled, hit, and they would take things from him. After the movie came out people started reaching out to bullied victims all across America.

Bullying had reached the point where it isn’t one kid pushing another on the playground, its gotten to the point where kids from ages 9-18 are considering killing themselves because some kid was mean to them. Bullying needs to be addressed, it can’t go on, it shouldn’t go on, and it won’t go on if people start getting their confidence and go over to that new kid sitting alone at lunch and invite them to sit with you.

Amelia's Home Network

The devices in my network include two laptops, one droid phone, one Wii, and one desktop computer. I learned what happens when you insert a web address. I think that was amazing how fast a computer processes that. I would tell people that the internet is very elaborate and intense. I never thought that a computer does so many things as fast as a snap.
