Alhaji Koita “Capstone”: SLA’S Periodic Table

Posted by Alhaji Koita in Capstone - Thompson - Wed on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 12:14 am
The capstone is one of the most influential & creative projects that Science Leadership produces. Each year students progress their talents to a bigger stage than just your everyday keynote presentation. This yearly long project takes blood, sweat, and tears to conquer. When Seniors begin this project they comprise their learnings from the last 3 years to come up with an appealing piece of work. An ideal capstone for students usually follows their passions. My passion is collecting and informing information. Some might call this journalism, I’d agree with statement 10 times of 10. Relaying information to people is something that I plan to study in college. My original idea for a capstone was to create an online podcast site for SLA students. Their I would’ve received ideas from SLA students on topics and themes that would be addressed in my podcast. After thinking over the elements of my project I decided that it wouldn’t suffice for an imprint on the SLA community. I wanted my presence to be ever lasting. So the idea hit me an art piece that would faithfully attached to the SLA community. I joined forces with another SLA senior, Kenyatta Bundy Jr, we came together to amass this masterpiece. When I complied the idea to Kenyatta he was electric. Like stated before relaying information is my passion, so the idea to me is simply beautiful. The original idea was to create a massive periodic table. Instead of relaying the elements, we wanted to relay students and teachers feelings of the education institution known as SLA. That being relayed in one word that describes SLA in one word. This would be placed in each 12 by 12 inch block. In addition to that students & teachers age would also be specified. To complete the tiles, the students graduating year would be placed in the top right corner. I have to say that this project has been one of the most difficult to complete. It has matured me as an individual. While management of time is one of the most important things I can take from this, it was a blast creating this piece of art.

While Kenyatta and I worked diligently on this project there is of course special thanks in order for our Capstone Mentor. An SLA english teacher for 9th and 12th graders, whose help was extremely appreciated. Guiding us through the process is something that I know both of us will not forget. This project of course would not be possible without the SLA community help as well. Without them relaying their information to us, this project would have failed miserably. I am eternally grateful to attend a school with students willing to help each other out, no matter the stress or difficulty it may bring.

Here is the link to the audio of my Creative Piece.

The world of the legendary storyteller William Shakespeare is at his best when he tells the breath-taking story about a Thane and his betrayal of honor towards the unlikelihood of him becoming the king. The themes of ambition and ruthless power bring out the true colors of the anti-hero.

William Shakespeare, the profound writer, poet and playwright is considered the all time best English language writer. Macbeth was just one of his many classic plays. Shakespeare has written many renowned stories from Romeo and Juliet, the story of two lovers from different worlds, to the story of Othello “The Moor of Venice”, as he brings classical themes together like racism and jealously. He died over 300 years ago and his plays are still related to the present issues we have in our culture today. The format and genre of the book is written as a script, in which the characters and the plot is given through the characters dialogue. The book was published in the year 1623 in a folio. Folio is a Shakespearean term for a series of collected literature.Blood and tears follow him, and the guilt of his unworthy deed costs him his companions lives. The wild grass hides the snake in its charlatan schemes. The two have a zealous soul and little do they know they can’t withstand the ramifications of their dishonored act.

Macbeth is said to be brave and honorable, but he struggles with these characteristics throughout the entire play. Three witches give him a prophecy that he will become the King of Scotland. Lady Macbeth, his wife, wants the prophecy to become reality. Her masculine ambition yokes that of her husband’s. She concocted a devious plan to allow her beloved Macbeth to become King. Lady Macbeth is introduced already planning the death of Duncan, the Scottish King. Macbeth questions himself, when he realizes he must take his own king’s life. Lady Macbeth then manipulates him by questioning his valor and spirit. Macbeth, now in a power struggle feels he needs to prove himself. So he puts all his objections to the deed aside and performs the “manly task”.

The play meets my various expectations. Such as having great dialogue, its ability can to pull me in and catch my attention, starting at the first page. It grabs your ideas and thinking to make you imagine. Another expectation I have is there beautiful words and detail. It gets a kudos for the descriptive details and great usage of words. Shakespeare a genius at work who encourages you to analyze his work.  The book is for readers that have some ideal thoughts on life and have many questions about what's right and wrong. I questioned ideas and themes in the play. For example, a controversial theme in the play was the lust for power and strive to make that power possible. In Macbeth's case, he was willing to kill to advance himself to the throne. Other themes that leave readers puzzled is the masculinity of the woman in the play. Lady Macbeth and the three witches that gave Macbeth the prophecies all jolt a act of violence in his actions. These actions in a woman are uncommon and that's why it puzzles so many readers. The play is full of pages with pure accuracy and detail, giving the reader a new perspective of regret. Which leads to aggressive power. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth feed off each other and that’s how they completed the task of killing Duncan, the Scottish King.

The novel reveals ideas and details that you can never imagine. It’s a classic play that’s is renowned around the world. It teaches you things you would never know about yourself. After reading this play I knew how I was going to approach the world and what flaws i needed to make about myself. Because like Macbeth everyone has ambition or goal. But you can not let it lead you into the valley of darkness and evil. The book can help you make decisions in the future about power and ambition; to teach you how these qualities work together. The book may be a hard read for people who are not use too old readings. For example, the book uses words that are not used in the modern day text. In the book that the play is in the book is organized so that if you understand the dialogue. So there is a nice way you can understand the plot. Macbeth is wonderful plot that you should give a chance.

Othello And the massacre of Problems

Posted by Alhaji Koita in English 2 - Pahomov on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 8:49 pm

Ahaji Koita                                            A-band

Journal 1

In this soliloquy, Iago is having a moment with himself. The scene is to produce the moment of fear in Iago eyes. Like he must not be caught and he must allow his plan to go accordingly. If Iago wanted to talk to the audience he might have looked up. Or say things to the side. All in all the point in which he should move his delivery is when someone is talking to him about the situation and he could continue to look at the audience. This also could be for a higher power when Iago gives reference to how he's lacking this plan way to long now its time to go forth with it.

IAGO

(aside) I have rubbed this young quat almost to the sense,

And he grows angry. Now, whether he kill Cassio

Or Cassio him, or each do kill the other,

Every way makes my gain. Live Roderigo,

He calls me to a restitution large

Of gold and jewels that I bobbed from him

As gifts to Desdemona.

It must not be. If Cassio do remain

He hath a daily beauty in his life

That makes me ugly. And besides, the Moor

May unfold me to him—there stand I in much peril. No, he must die. But so, I hear him coming.

Journal 2

I am choosing the character, Emilia because she has a moment in the end of the book where she has full control over the men in the story. Spilling all the secrets. In act 5 scene 2 the scene where Othello shows and gives out what people have been lying about. They see the all the things that happen in the story but they don't speak about it. Emilia is like the audience but she knows everything. She is told lies but they are unknown to her until the following acts. We can concentrate more if we were able to see how she can change throughout the story. This character is very quiet throughout the novel and is more and more talkative in the final act she was in. That act took her life.

Journal 3

My name is Othello of the Northern Tribe of Morocco. I have been through much in my life. I have seen my brother killed right in front of my eyes. My mother was a bare woman. I loved her. She was my guardian angel. When I was younger my father said, you're going to have great promise and an even better lover. When I first heard this I told my father I am warrior I have not time for such chaotic social ideals. I met her on my way back to the homeland. She was ravishing, my eyes couldn't stop to bare her beauty. Her hazel brown hair, took my heart away. I saw love within her. She changed my life and how I view. I asked her, her name. She replied, My name is Desdemona. My heart sank. That divine name was the deal breaker for the start of my new life. She was going to be my wife. And I swear on it. Othello was a very strict and spiritual man that never would give someone pain for his wife.

Journal 4

In the performance I plan on be being very scary and horrific to the crowd. This is because my scene consists of attempting on killing Desdemona with a pillow. The prop I plan on bringing in tomorrow is a crown of some sorts. This can be very difficult to pull off but I will try my best. Our group's presentation will stand because we have focused so well on making it the best it can be. Even though it can be a little nerve racking the "Death and all". But Nikki and I are very proud of the piece will be performing for the class. We have agreed that will push each other to doing anything that the other is not comfortable with doing. This led to an awesome scene for the two of us to share with our classmates.

OTHELLO

It is the cause, it is the cause, my soul.

Let me not name it to you, you chaste stars,

It is the cause. Yet I’ll not shed her blood,

Nor scar that whiter skin of hers than snow

And smooth as monumental alabaster.

Yet she must die, else she’ll betray more men.

Put out the light, and then put out the light.

If I quench thee, thou flaming minister,

I can again thy former light restore

Should I repent me. But once put out thy light,

Thou cunning’st pattern of excelling nature,

I know not where is that Promethean heat

That can thy light relume. When I have plucked thy rose

I cannot give it vital growth again,

It must needs wither. I’ll smell thee on the tree.

Oh, balmy breath, that dost almost persuade

Justice to break her sword! One more, one more.

Be thus when thou art dead and I will kill thee

And love thee after. (kissing her) One more, and that’s the last.

So sweet was ne'er so fatal. I must weep,

But they are cruel tears. This sorrow’s heavenly,

It strikes where it doth love. She wakes.

Journal 5

In this quote Othello is contemplating his ordeal with his dear, Desdemona he has no idea what the truth is. But Othello is going to take her life anyway. The young warrior loved her so much, when heard this he was crushed. Pulling him straight into denial and revenge. Othello wanted use different ways to cancel out his emotions and find a more accurate reason for killing his honest lover. The reason he chose was that if he did not kill her, she would end up betraying other men. In the quote he says, "Yet she must die, else she’ll betray more men". Here is a clear example of why othello has completely lost his heart and cherish for her. Another major sentence in the quote is when he uses personification to explain two actions that he is going to complete. Othello says," Put out the light, and then put out the light". Othello is saying that he is going to put out the actual light in the room that he is in. And then put out the light in Desdemona's heart. When I said this quote in my performance I sounded sad and angry at the same time. This was a very emotional time for Othello. He was on the verge of killing his wife.  I believe that this was the most important scene in the book. Without this scene there would be no story. This is the climax of the story and can only be told like this. My scene turned out the way I wanted it.

In this project I have learned that people are not what they appear. People can go through things that you never know about and be able to comprehend how they feel. I just want to know have you ever listened to one of your favorite and the artist talks about woman in negative influence like calling her a bitch or hoe. Has that ever been something that makes you want to change your song or listen something different. Well to me that's crossing boundaries. Im here with Katie Walker & Pierce Luck who have a stories for us.

Reflection:This is a form of crossing boundaries because people should know that life is always changing you have ups and downs. And you have people who speak there mind. In the project I have learned about new things such as, how people act when they hear things that have profanities in them. This is major conflict in the world and I'm still not sure if there should be change because, at the end of the day they are just words. Its just how we interpret them.

Black Language

Posted by Alhaji Koita in English 2 - Pahomov on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 6:22 pm
Hmm ... Where do I begin my language has changed for many years I am a dot on the face of the earth, compared to the change in my language throughout the past decades. To the wisdom of our father's father’s to the “ghetto” poetry of being poets and rappers. I am Black Language. Black Language now what is that really is that the evolution of my ancestors who put this country on their back and made it what it is today. The real idea is the disappearance of a beautiful language and all its speakers. My rhythm is an extension of me. I am the legacy that my brothers left. “The way I speak“ain’t”yo damn business.” Because I am the language.

Proper manners and speech are a  certain type of racial bystander to make others think of you better they are just another way society has put us in this deep hole of racism. My slang has changed I don't know anybody that talks like me. I know of many languages such as, Krio, Modern English, Mandingo, Spanish. All originate from their father Latin. Is that so terrible or is it just change that made us, Us.

We are pawns to the beautiful language known as Black Language. Underrated some would say. I thank god. This is life. We make mistakes, hated that's the way of life. This is my language that turns us to the pressure that we under. This is race, and I am a Alien in this line. Ready, set, Go! I'm off light years away on top of my game. I am Black Language.

In my life there have been moments that power is my language and how I can use that to my advantage. In this particular example the individual was a older white man that in my opinion was very racist. In the climax of the scene my language was my sword.

“ You old racist man you really think you can shut me and my people down, I gonna be me you arguing over a damn parking spot? This ain’t gotta be this serious!” This is probably the maddest I have ever been on something so simple like a parking spot. It was like someone was controlling my every word.
In my own right there some moments in life I don’t regret but this is not one of them. Another that was important me was when I was just with my friends talking about the All Star Weekend, and we used different words like “Flames” and Bangin’” These are simple words that mean something was good and we can see that our teachers were looking at us. They probably thought we were talking about sex or some inappropriate activity. But that's the stereotype that is automatically assigned to me because of the way I speak.
I try to ignore but it always seems to get to me. I asked my mom and dad why does the world still have to be Black and White? They replied the normal, “ Haji that’s how life is. You can’t let things get to you.” Then I told them about what happened in school that week. And their answer to this was baffling, But one thing that made me really mad, was when they said maybe you should change how you speak Haji. I thought about that at first I said, But then I thought why should I change myself for the benefit of someone else's selfish reasons. That don't make no damn sense! Who are they to judge me. "Imma be me!" I said.

Black language is what unites people it's what gave my ancestors hope to be free the white man! We are people. What is the white man you say? White man is Pork. They are the oppressors. They rigamortis by the death we will still shine cause, we are the people. A dying language.

Racism will never die it will only multiply and this the hard truth. My name is Alhaji Sheku Taylor Koita. I got it from my grandfather. He was born in Mali but grew up in the city of Freetown in Sierra Leone. He was a famous taylor there that's how he obtained the middle name taylor. My name is very hard to say. Every new class, every new year. Never can my name be said correctly. The 1st year of the 3rd grade my teacher was taking role, she pronounced my name" lhahgi coyote" as 8 years old you could imagine my anger towards this teacher but I needed to realize that we are all different people and that we have different accents. And these accents make us who we are, for the rest of our lives.

I guess you could say that these accents are another muscle and you can be weak or strong. There are many examples of how Black Language truly exists and its full of unique and beautiful people. But know like this quote I picked from no other than, James Baldwin. He is a famous author, for his many inspiring lines and essays of dialogue. But it was a line in the essay he wrote called, “If black English Isn’t a language then tell me what is”. This actually got me started to writing this essay. But in the text he says, “Now, I do not know what white Americans would sound like if there had never been any black people in the United States, but they would not sound the way they sound.”. I thought this was confusing at first, how would they sound different you may ask? Well because like I was saying accents are like muscles and muscles can be many different shapes and sizes and can be strong or weak. But it also goes back to how you use it in your advantage.

All in all, this is a language that has been matured from since it was an infant. Back when my ancestors were being enslaved. Trust me there is no enemy here. In fact without this most ridiculous times in American History I wouldn't be who I am. Hell I wouldn’t be able to write this essay. This is just a twinkle in the fire soon it will be raging flame thrower breaks the street of America. And then we can say,“Who will survive in America?”

Blog #3 Post for change

Posted by Alhaji Koita on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 12:55 pm

Wow we’re finally here, my final post. Through out this project I realized that I couldn’t judge things I know a little about. Within my research lately I came across this organization called The Water Project. This is amazing organization because it really helped me find out how I can make change in a way I feel is most necessary. If you came across my second then you read about my experience in Sierra Leone. Well if you did miss it then in 2010 I traveled there with my family and I so many differences in how they act from American society. But one important difference I saw was how they receive their water, which is in a bag. I know really a plastic bottle that you have to poke a whole in. I was so outraged, it was indescribable. But with this foundation I found they can donate water to the people of that country.

·      That’s a start to how I want to help end this major crisis.

To raise money and make it aware to people. I plan to have a school wide bake sale. That I will try to raise as much money as I can. I will post influential posters across my school. Science Leadership Academy. These posters will not only make people of the water crisis but informing them about the Bake Sale that will be held.

On tuesday we had a luncheon from las cascuelas. It was really cool to see all the food . I really enjoyed the food and my favorite was the chicken with green sauce. I liked both of the drinks. The juice had an interesting taste and it was pretty different, from your average fruit punch. I really enjoyed the milk cake it tasted like rice pudding.

Blog # 2 You and the World

Posted by Alhaji Koita on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 3:16 pm
I hope you enjoyed the 1st Blog and you informed others about the change we want to do. It really makes a difference when people know what the problem is. There are many things I want to talk about, but lets start off with this question. Who is to blame? When I asked myself this question believe it or not was that it was the countries fault. The location of these countries has huge drought rates. Their government was financially stable to take care of the people that lived there.

I was so ignorant about a lot of things before I considered this. I soon figured I was wrong when I learned many of these countries need aid in all types of ways. When I traveled to West Africa last year, I saw so many different things like deserted beaches, filthy waterways, and empty rivers. There was also other things that were unusual in American communities. The most interesting thing I saw was how their water looked. It was in a bag! Yes I know a bag really, I was so upset and angry to see that people in America  thrive with water. While they need to drink water from a plastic bag.

Something needs to change.

Recent research that I found was much more broder this time around. I couldn't believe that this was happening. On the NyTimes  it was giving a much important quote that really opened my eyes to what is to come. "Many of the wars in this century were about oil, but wars of the next century will be over water". This quote was said by Ismail Seragaldin, the World's bank vice president. This really shocked me because, I feel as though water is a God Giving substance.

In this Picture above it showed the water in a bag.

While researching a came across this movie about water crisis all across the world. The trailer was interesting it as talking about a major group called FLOW. Flow is this international program that helps people all across the world come to terms that we have reached an international water crisis. I feel this is a important topic because it allowed me to realize the most important things in life are each other. We need each other.

The International Water Crisis

Posted by Alhaji Koita in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 1:53 pm

What do you know about water crisis in the world, not only in Africa? What, you thought I was going to talk about was how people in Africa can’t get water? Many people think that the water crisis is only in far away places like Africa or Asia, but its not, its in our own backyards. It is something that much be addressed immediately, the future of mankind depends on it.

If we continue to consume water at our present rate, we will only have enough water to sustain us for another decade.

In the US, we often take things for granted. While most Americans enjoy such luxuries as air-conditioning, laundry machines, and cellphones, many people around the world don't even have access to clean water. Take a look at this chart below.

Negative Space Reflection:

Posted by Alhaji Koita in Art - 9 - Hull on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 1:59 pm

Negative Space Reflection:

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it) - Negative space is showing the space between all different figures in reality.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing? I find negative by looking at the actual object.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space? It can be helpful because it shows what they need to add or decrease.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not? Not to me it makes things unclear and not able to understand the drawings.

El secreto del Gato (Un Mito Folklorico Peruano)

All about me slide

Posted by Alhaji Koita in Technology - Hull on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 12:01 pm
I used this special zen presentation to help me make this slide. It gave me a working period to figure out how I want it to look. I choose bright red to allow the viewer to be caught in a ray of light. I then made the background black to allow it to pop as well. I gave the back ground hearts and money because that's all about me. I then put my name in a mega font in which gave it a dramatic font that gave it the sense that its all about me. To finish the presentation it was a good experience that helped me with more slides.

All about ME slide

Posted by Alhaji Koita in Technology - Hull on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at 6:11 pm
In this Slide I choose these images because I feel they represent me. Such as the Atom image in far right corner. I choose this because i enjoy science. I also choose the Playstation icon because i enjoy video games. In the Middle I wrote "live life to the fullest" that is just one of the mottos i live by. The second one says "Be yourself no matter what". I wrote these mottos because they help get through my daily life. On the right and left corners at the top are my favorite music groups. Also the image on the far right top corner has money and hearts, something I also base my daily life on. The other images are just my favorite stores to shop at when I am at the mall. To top it all off I wrote Science leadership academy in fancy to show how much I love this school.
