Reflection

(Option #3)

The most challenging thing about this project was finding sources to back up the pictures I had taken; I started taking pictures before I found my sources, which was a bad idea. I should have looked up things in Philadelphia that were well documented and then taken pictures of them. I looked at the document on the moodle assignment page for the benchmark hyperlinked as topics and started brainstorming ideas of what pictures I could collect and what theme I wanted to portray through my pictures. I then thought about pictures would be the most convenient to retrieve after school or even during school if I had a free period. After I collected the ones that were close by the school I started thinking of other places in Center city that I could get to via trolley or short train ride and by my house that I could go and document as a sign

I took 10 pictures although there are only 9 posted because I couldn’t get the 10th picture to upload and I was running out of time for my project. My favorite picture was the mansion. Not only because the Elkins Estate is beautiful and I’ve loved the architecture and elegance that the home has but also because I had to work very hard at finding history behind it. I wasn’t sure that I was going to be able to use that picture because I hadn’t found anything worth using that I could connect back to my theme or globalization. After I found information about the Nun’s that lived there I really started to dig up lots of information. So this picture became my favorite because I worked the hardest at it and because I love the house, after finishing my connections for that picture I felt more accomplished than I did for any of the other pictures. Overall, I’m not sure if it’s less or more prevalent in places other than Philly because I didn’t look for links between globalization and those cities. However, having said that I think that there is a larger amount of people immigrating to other countries like Florida and California that might have more signs of globalization because there are larger cities than Philadelphia so it makes sense that within those places that there would be more signs. I think that for a moderately sized city I think that it’s pretty evident in this Philadelphia. There are lots of examples in the businesses, neighborhoods, restaurants and shops as well as in the universities; each of them show a different portion of globalization but it is pretty evenly conveyed in each section.

I learned a lot about how I work and about Philadelphia. I didn’t have a lot of trouble actually writing about the pictures connection to globalization because it was pretty evident if you understood the lessons that we were taught in class. I learned so much about Philadelphia; I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know. I’ve been to the liberty bell, constitution center, Chinatown; all of which are places that I’ve been too so many times and never even thought about the historical value of the landmarks. I always assumed that the majority of the landmarks were put there as a agreement or as a gift and most of them were but I never thought of them as globalization. Now that I do Philadelphia seems much more interesting and historically rich than ever before.

Co-captain of the Pep Squad Club Creates a show

     Step team performance &

      The “Show your colors” show

Ashley Etheredge

Manuel Advisory

Summary

I helped create a club (SLA’s fist pep-squad), I put on a show as well as choreographed a step routine that was performed in the show.

Abstract

My project was a performance that was based around SLA’s new pep-squad; I put on the show; including getting acts, setting up the performance space and setting the date and time but I also choreographed a step routine that was performed in the show. My step team performed in my show the “Show your colors” show, which was originally going to be a Black History Month show however; due to complications (of which I will explain in depth later in this paper) I was unable to meet my deadlines and missed Black History Month. I wanted to create a club that would continue on at the school after I was gone, that girls and boys could continue into college if they wanted to. I felt that this club could bring people together from all grades like other clubs such as SLA capella, Ping pong and the Poetry club but in a different way that people might not have seen before. I wanted to give insecure teenage girls and boys more self-confidence while having a ton of fun and meeting new people.

If you were unable to attend the show, don't worry you can view it here!

5 point framework-Sudan & Armenia Collapse project

Reflection:

This semester we’ve been learning about collapsibility, and what leads up to collapsibility. We’ve been reading a book called Collapse by Jared Diamond, we’ve been using his 5 point framework to measure the how good of a chance we think that a country will or won’t collapse.

My two countries were Sudan and Armenia. I chose Sudan because I had already looked up some information on Armenia and realized that they shared some similar problems. I wanted to make my project interesting and interactive, so I decided to create a website that looked at collapsibility as a whole and specifically for those two countries. I researched all of my information for Armenia first so that I would have a better idea of what to look for when I researched Sudan. However, it took me much longer to find information about Sudan than it did about Armenia. As I started to look for the same subjects that I had found for Armenia, each subject had at least two layers of information.

For example, South Sudan is now independent so I had to look up information for both South Sudan and North Sudan. I then took that information and split it up into smaller portions of that information to explain my overall topic/message to the viewer.

Again I wanted to make my scale interesting to look at so I used a Prezi to set up the scale for both countries with a brief explanation of why I gave this portion of the five point framework that rating. I used the 5 point framework multiple times because I though that it would be the least confusing for the format I chose. I was originally going to separate each portion of the framework into different pages but that might have been overwhelming for a lot of people, including myself so I decided against it.

I think that the five point framework is pretty easy for me to grasp after reading the book because its repeated very often so I knew what I was looking for when I had to apply it to other countries, like the two I chose. The harder part was justifying my rating, I had to weigh out consequences more than I had been so it felt like a little bit of a stretch at first because I wasn’t sure if I had chosen the right number or not.

If there was one thing that I could change it would be to work harder on this, time wise. I usually manage my time very well, because I like planning and I have steps for almost everything when it comes to schoolwork. But this time, because I had my capstone in 3 days with constant problems occurring I had to run back and fourth between the two and that left me less time to actually work on the project especially with multiple technical difficulties, I didn’t leave myself enough time. Therefore, I think I basically through myself off schedule, which resulted in a late benchmark.

Mis criticas de las películas en Español 5

Posted by Ashley Etheredge in Spanish 5 - Gierke on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 8:19 am

Ashley's World of 100 Analysis

Posted by Ashley Etheredge in Globalization - Laufenberg on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 6:36 pm
Estimated Literacy
Estimated Literacy
Analysis: It appears that I was the closest to the correct answer in the first graph on the left, labeled “Literate Men” than in the other three. I was actually more accurate than the class average. However in the next three graphs, for “Illiterate Men”, “Literate Women” and “Illiterate Women” my estimations were way off. For categories “Illiterate men”, my answer was closer to the correct answer but only because the class average’s estimation was more off than mine. For “Literate Women” my answer fell just under that of the class averages’ and they both fell very short of the correct answer. For “Illiterate Women” my answer was the most incorrect, the correct answer was so much less than that of both the class average and my answer. I found it interesting that our class as a whole thought that there would be much less of a gap between illiterate women and men.

Estimated World Language

Estimated Literacy

Analysis: For this graph I noticed that the class average was always pretty off, but we were the most off for the category labeled “Speak other languages” located at the end on the right. My answer was closest to the correct answer for the number of people who would speak Chinese, Hindustani and Bengali. I over shot the majority of the languages; I based my numbers off of the most popular languages that are taught in schools in America today. It turns out that the most popular would be Chinese, Malay-Indonesian and other languages. This category proved to be the one that the class as a whole was the most off, which is also shown on the next graph.

Estimated Secondary Language

Estimated Secondary Education

Analysis: My estimations were pretty dead on, for each section my answer fell either just under or just above the correct answer. The class average stayed around the same number (50) even though the categories changed. For example, Men with Secondary Education, the class average fell just under fifty, and Men without Secondary Education the class average fell right at fifty. I think that it’s interesting that the class average doesn’t change as far as secondary education between women and men.

All categories:

All categories chart

Part 4: My most inaccurate category was Language, I was way off, and my most accurate category was Secondary Education. I’m not quite sure why I was much more accurate for secondary education than the other categories. But Like I said earlier, I have a hunch that the reason that I was so inaccurate for Language was because I used my own general understanding about popular languages. I only used the most popular languages taught in the United States, I didn’t factor in to languages taught in other places in the world. Since these charts would reflect the whole world that probably didn’t help me in the end. The answer that shocked me the most was how many people would speak other languages, the class average and my answer was both estimated that 5%-10% of the world would speak languages that weren’t listed when in actuality 51.8%, that’s half of the world who would speak languages that weren’t listed. I was surprised at how many languages I didn’t know existed/ account for. I showed me how limited my knowledge was about languages, since I would like to become a translator in the future I was really taken back by how inaccurate my numbers turned out being (especially because that was the one section I felt most confident in). Overall my numbers were pretty off I think that happened because I haven’t been paying as much attention to current events that have been happening in the world. I do find the majority of these categories interesting, but I haven’t been paying as much attention as I could be and will do more often.

Mi libro Beso

Posted by Ashley Etheredge in Spanish 5 - Gierke on Sunday, November 13, 2011 at 11:02 pm

-No.

“-Quiero decir cuánto tiempo he estado aquí. Él dudo.

-Seis semanas.

-¿Seis semanas?/

- No recuerdo nada de eso.

-No es extraño. Él miro su reglo de pulsera.

-14 de octubre. Domingo. Viniste el 1 de septiembre.

-Septiembre.

-Trató de recordar agosto.

-Nada. Julio.

-Nada, Más lejos.

-Nada. /

Seis semanas desde…

¿Desde que?

Viajó a Guatemala.

Posted by Ashley Etheredge in Spanish 5 - Gierke on Sunday, November 13, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Kasha Recipe By Julia Boyer & Ashley Etheredge
Screen Shot 2011-11-14 at 12.59.46 PM

Ingredients
    • 1 egg
    • 2 cups of veggie/chicken broth
    • 1 tbsp. butter
    • 1 cup of Buckwheat/ Kasha
    • Cumin
    • Jane’s Krazy mixed-up Seasonings (original)

Preparing Kasha
Instructions
    • Step 1: Get a large pot, pour broth and bring to a boil, mix in a tbsp. of butter.
    • Step 2: Meanwhile, mix Kasha and egg together.
    • Step 3: Put Kasha and egg mixture into the wok/ frying pan on medium heat.
    • Step 4: Stir continuously (so that the kasha mixture will not stick to the pan or together), let the grains separate and looks dry but not brown.
    • Step 5: When broth comes to a boil, pour into wok/frying pan.
    • Step 6: Stir and cover on medium heat for 30 minutes (check every 5-10 minutes to stir), let the Kasha absorb the broth.
    • Step 7: When the Kasha has absorbed all of the broth, season to taste with mixed seasoning salt and cumin.

Kasha Recipe Analysis

This meal is an easy and healthy option for any family. It consists of two
whole ingredients and two processed ingredients. As a staple food in Eastern
Europe, Kasha is filling and nutritious. It is 82% carbohydrates, 12% protein and
6% fats. Kasha is also a good source of dietary fiber and magnesium with 155
calories for 168 grams. The dietary fiber is the part of food that your body cannot
process; therefore it acts as a regulator for your digestive system. Magnesium is
important for numerous functions in your body: nerve impulse transmissions and
formation of healthy bones. It’s safe to say that this food is nutritious. It is also an
environmentally friendly dish.
The buckwheat used was organic and the eggs were from free-range
chickens. The store we purchased these items from look for local farms to buy from

so the buckwheat groats and eggs didn’t travel far. The item that traveled the
farthest was the vegetable broth that we wanted to use to be vegetarian. It was
imported from Canada and creates a large carbon footprint, which is ironic and an
example of the choices and priorities consumers have.
The cost of a meal is a big deciding factor for consumers. This meal is fairly
feasible. The entire buckwheat costs only 3 dollars and this recipe calls for half of
the bag. One organic egg costs 32 cents and the broth costs around 3 dollars. While
the total is much more than a fast food meal, this is a pretty cheap meal considering
that two of the items, if not more are organic.
An important aspect of kasha is that most of these products can be produced
through a self-sufficient process. Chickens can make the eggs and are easy to
contain as livestock in backyards. Buckwheat is apparently easy to grow and can be
used in numerous types of food. The only issue with the self-sufficient food process
is the limited resources in certain urban areas. Ashley and I are fortunate to own
houses with backyards, but many people live in apartments or row homes and
cannot grow their own food. However, many of these items were purchased in Acme
and were still labeled “organic” so this meal could still be accessible.
Therefore, Kasha is a good food to know how to cook. It is nutritious,
environmentally friendly and affordable. All of the items needed for Kasha can be
bought at grocery markets such as Acme or local stores or even grown at home. As a
dish, Kasha follows a lot of the food rules. It is less than 5 ingredients, it is something
my grandmother would recognize as food, and it’s vegetarian and organic. All in all,
it’s a great dish.

Personal Reflection

I’ve learned a lot about my role in the food system in this unit as well as the role that the food system plays in our lives. In the documentary, Food inc, I got to see just how close knit our government is to each other.  I also was able to see how terrible our conventional food system is, because they deliberately keep Americans in the dark about what they’re eating because they want people to want to buy their food. But if McDonalds was as small as a local restaurant that had an e-coli breakout, it would be immediately shut down so that no one goes there to eat again. But when it’s a multi-million dollar company in which more people are at risk of getting food poisoning, they continue to produce possibly poisoned food. The biggest problem in our system is not that the American’s are in the dark, although that is a very, very large problem the biggest problem is that the people we Americans trust to protect us have no power against these companies, so it’s hard to tell what we can or can’t eat especially if the ones we should eat are not available to us (because they’re too expensive or not sold at the grocery stores we can afford). What helped me recognize my role in the system was to spread the word about conventional food operations and the bad things that can happen to people if they are not careful about what they eat. Personally, I’m going to tell my family and change how we eat and where we buy our fruits and vegetables from.

Musical Instrument blog #2

Posted by Ashley Etheredge in Physics - Echols on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 10:26 am
In a ukelele sound is produced through sound waves, created by vibrations. Vibrations are created from energy transfer from the strings being strummed. Depending on how hard you strum the more the strings will vibrate and the louder the sound will be.
Specifically, pitch is be changed through the tension of the strings at the head of the guitar and where you apply pressure to the strings on the neck. For instance, if you apply pressure to the strings onto a fret close to the center of the guitar, the pitch of will be higher and vice versa; if pressure was applied closer to the head of the guitar then the pitch would be deeper.

What materials will you actually be using for your instrument and why?
I will be using a wooden box, strings wooden rods or poles for the neck and guitar stings. I will shorten them to a appropriate length for my ukelele. To create the correct sound, I'll use a wooden box because I can easily sand it and change the shape of the box accordingly to the sound I'm trying to create. The rods will act as my ukelele's neck. Together,  I'll be able to  play my instrument like an acoustic guitar or ukelele.

Do we have time in class to practice the song or do we have to build and practice the instrument outside of class?

Blog # 1

I would like to play the Ukelele, it is a string instrument. Sound is produced by the musician strumming the strings. Depending on how tight the strings are and how thick the strings are. A different sound or pitch is produced due to tension. Tension is kind of like friction, tension is caused by the objects resistance to movement, like friction. However, tension focuses more on the vibration of the strings rather than its movement in general.  By pressing down on the strings in different places on the frets (which are small rods attached to the neck of string instruments like guitars, ukeleles, violins etc.) also changes how high or low the pitch of the strings will be.
Ukeleles are typically rounded wood, with a small cut out hole in the middle to let sound escape. the exact size of the ukeleles alternate. The shape is really important for the sound to amplify, the sound waves can bounce off of the rounded and flat surfaces rather than pointy or just simply a straight box.
Which makes me think a lot about how I'm going to create my ukelele, specifically what kind of materials I'm going to need in order for the sound waves the be amplified enough for everyone to hear them. I think that this is going to take a lot of hard work and a good amount of calculations especially when I add and tune the strings.

Considering that I didn't know much about sound waves except for the basics of them. Like how mediums interact with them, and the fact their their are multiple types such as sound, light or UVA/UVB rays, heat and wave disturbance within a liquid. I don't know exactly what type of wave is going through the liquid or medium. I did not learn about waves before these classes so this is all knew to me. But I know, that I have quite a bit of learning ahead of me before friday, when we perform.

¿ Porqué no?

"Woman with Shawl," by David Alfaro Siqueiros

Posted by Ashley Etheredge in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 8:58 pm
