Advanced Essay #3: My answer of my identity and belongs

Posted by Alex Lee Chan in English 3 · Block · E Band on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 5:11 am
My goals for the paper is to not get the mistake I got from the pat two essay. The parts that I am proud of is the ending. The areas that I need to improve is the quoting.

My answer of my identity and belongs

I have always felt that I have belonged to and was a part of the group, especially in the schools I was in both in Hong Kong and here in Philadelphia. While in Hong Kong there was only a little diversity and sometimes it was hard for me to be a part of the society. For one I have always enjoyed listening to American music while most people in Hong Kong listened to Asian Music. Also they have the different issues between Hong Kong and America as what I watch in youtube. So in that case it was difficult to relate. But in America, I didn’t have these issues because in America they watch and listen the same things as me, so it made it easier to belong to a group in America.

In my school, students accepted you no matter a person’s race, skin color or physical problem, so it was easy to be with others who shared the same interest. For me, I have many friends in the school that always talk to me, do homework and fun things together. This gives me the feeling that school is my other home. But when I was outside the school, the my belonging changed really fast.

The people will always judge your skin color, then they will think all the negative they know to look down at me. The worst things are the people who look down based on skin color, they group all the Asian together without recognizing that they are all from different countries. Where I came from – Hong Kong – it has different systems than China. To a person with enough knowledge, they would know the difference between Hong Kong and China, but to a person who doesn't have this  knowledge, they will think they are all same. In my experience, the people who know the place Hong Kong will think people from Hong Kong know more English than people from China. And also they will use stereotype to talk about you.

“What is your identity?” It took me a long time to find the answer to this question. Some people said that it is easy to find your identity, it’s just based on where you are born. But I don't  think it is that easy for me. I am different than the other students in my class. I came to America two years ago – I should have said I came “back” to America two years ago. After I came back to America, I always said “I am not American, but I was born here.” It just like a quote that I read, “You’re Chinese, but I’m not,” he told me, with certainty. “But I eat Chinese food.” It is saying though my parents are Chinese, but I am not the same as my parents. This quote can be used to reflect what I thought back there. Time passed,  and I learned more about my background. But most importantly, I now know more about myself, and about my identity. So now I can finally answer what my identity is to anyone.

My answer to the question “what is your identity?” is I am an Asian-American. How did I find this answer? It took me 15 years to answer but I finally understand it. When I was only starting to know about my identity I only knew I am an Asian. I was born in Hong Kong and, I knowy mother’s language is Cantonese. Those are what makes up my identity. Also it did not take a long time to change my mindset until my parents told me that I was born in America which is the opposite side of where we live in Hong Kong. After hearing that, my mindset has changed. I always asked myself “Was I Asian? Or was I something else? f I was someone else, should my mother’s language should not be Cantonese, then what is it?”

When I was in grade 8, I finally had the answer of why I was in Hong Kong if I was born in America. It was because my parents did not want me to remember the ugly side of Chinese history. So they went to America before I was born, to not remember the history of China. After that, my mindset has changed again to the question of my race, am I Asian or am I American? This question was asked to me after I came back to America. I did not get the answer immediately. Then I finally got it one year after I came back, the answer is neither Asian nor American it is Asian-American. So if a person asked me “what is your identity?” right now, I would said “I am an Asian-American, I born in America but I moved to Hong Kong to study, and after three months I was born. Then I came back to America in the year 2017.”

But to the society, my identity is just another Asian-American that was born in America to get the benefit from America. Some of them  will just look down at me. They will think since I was not from America, my English is trash and I don’t even know English. They will use all the negative things to say about you, just like your belonging.

At the end, all I can say is, I do not care! I don’t care how you look at me, if you hate me. I will live like you, eat like you, learn like you. I will keep using my answer to identity and belonging to live in America. I will keep being an Asian-American.

Advanced Essay #2 From Asian to Asian American

Posted by Alex Lee Chan in English 3 · Block · E Band on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 2:12 am
My goal for the paper is to accept how people talk with the language that they are not used to. Parts that you are proud of is the intro, and the areas for improvement in the future is the outro.

From Asian to Asian American

Asian American, it is what I am right now. I was born in America, but I have lived in Hong Kong for most of my life. I never considered myself an Asian American, since I only spoke Cantonese. I was just an Asian who spoke decent English. However, after coming back to America for highschool, I finally know which one I am.

After I was born, I went to my mom’s and my dad’s country of birth, which is Hong Kong. here, I learned to speak and read Cantonese, and it became my mother language. I talked to my friends and my family in Cantonese. I studied subjects in Cantonese, but a lot of people thought I was good at English since I born in America. But I was just like those who were born in Hong Kong. Although I did learn English in Hong Kong, it was just  basic English, like tenses, and simple vocabulary. English was my second language.

There are two types of Cantonese, one is from the textbook and one is from what people speak. The one from what people speak is the easier version to the one from the textbook, so when we spoke, people would understand easily. We don’t speak the one from the textbook because it doesn’t sound good, according to my dad. When I said anything, nobody had problem understanding.I understood what people said easily, in school, at home, in the restaurant, etc. No problem. Also, I never spoke differently to who I was speaking, Whether it be friends or family, I spoke the same way every time, maybe when I spoke with elderly, I may spoke politely.

I was about 14 years old, my dad said he wanted me and my older brother to go back to where I was born to study for the rest of my life, because he wanted me to have a better life in America. My first thought was that it was a joke. There was no way I was going back to where I was born. I loved being in Hong Kong. But in reality, parents can do what they say and what they want, and because of that, I moved to America after third years of Secondary.

I missed my friends in here, I missed my family in here, since only my mom was going with me, I missed my dad the most, I just didn’t want to leave without them, also back I was about 3 to 5, I heard United States can have gun and Hong Kong can’t, and I scared about getting shot in United States. I just don’t want to leave. But at the end, me, my older brother and my mom went back to where I born to kept continue study.

After I went back to America, every things were new to me, the place, the people, the lifestyle, all were new, it liked I was learning another culture. Since I was not in Hong Kong, I needed to use my second language which is English, I could say my English was suddenly getting worse when I was using English in America. Like one time when we were in a restaurant, it was my first time I went to a fast food restaurant in the United States, because my mom’s English is not good, I was the one who ordered food, and it was my first time I spoke to a person whose mother language is English in the United States, I was a bit nervous because it was my first time spoke with American, I scared about he would not understand my English, and he did. In “If Black English Isn't a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is?”, James Baldwin agrees to what language should be: “Language is also political instrument, means, and proof of power”. When I ordered the food, he had a hard time to understand my English, then my older brother saw that problem, he came to me and help me a bit. After that, we got our food and experience of how we spoke.

After the restaurant experience, I wanted to improve my English as soon as possible so that I could let people knew what I was saying and knew what they were saying, so I try to say more, write more, read more… Although I still struggle with English when I was in the school right now, at least I got better in my English compare to when I first arrived America.

Advanced Essay #1: Pittsburgh Vacation

Posted by Alex Lee Chan in English 3 · Block · E Band on Friday, September 22, 2017 at 8:43 am
Introduction: My goal of the paper is to write more than I usually do, the part that I am proud of is the third paragraph, the areas for improvement in the future is the reflection.

Pittsburgh Vacation

This past  summer, I went on a trip to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is also a city in the state of pennsylvania located just west of Philadelphia. This trip was a summer camp which focused on giving the campers an introduction to civil engineering as I have an interest in this area.

I received the information about this camp from my ILP program. After finding out more information about the camp and the program, I told my mother about my interest in this program and how I wanted to participate. My mom was very happy that I wanted to join the summer camp in Pittsburgh because she wanted to go to Pittsburgh for a long time.  My brother was also interested in the program too. After speaking to her, she gave her permission for me to register for the camp. We decided we would go to Pittsburgh together. My big brother would go with us as well.

The camp that I joined in Pittsburgh was about a famous architectural building called “Fallingwater”. Fallingwater is a house that was designed in 1935 by an architect named Frank Lloyd Wright. It was designed in the modern and organic architectural style.Fallingwater is surrounded by a forest with a river going under the house. The house was built with no air conditioning, but it had an opening to the river under the house that was used to let the natural wind come into the house. The most different thing between Fallingwater and American houses are the windows. The windows in Fallingwater are much bigger than the normal American house. Fallingwater makes you want to go outside rather than stay in the house because of the beauty that surrounds the house.

The summer camp was 7 days long. We planned to arrive at the Pittsburgh three days before the start of summer camp. We arrived early to allow us to explore this new place. We traveled there by Greyhound bus and it took approximately 51/2 to get to our destination. The bus experience went well until one of the windows in the bus broke, but we still arrived to our destination safety. After we arrived, we took another bus to get to the house we would stay for three days. We then went to the nearest store to buy food for dinner and came back. The second day, we went to The Andy Warhol Museum, and to a restaurant to eat our lunch. After lunch, we went back and wait for next day.

The first day that summer camp started, one of the teachers picked us up drove us to Fallingwater. It took 1 hour to from the place we were staying in Pittsburgh to get to Fallingwater. After we arrived, my mom joined a tour to Fallingwater and  after the tour she went back to the place she was staying. Then I went to the meeting place for the summer camp, which was High Meadow, our living place in the summer camp.  The first day of the camp, we introduced ourselves to each other.   All of the students were in grades 10 to 12 grade.  At Fallingwater we draw some scenes with all of our 5 senses. We drew a scene outside the Fallingwater and one in the inside. The outside scene is a road that was covered with green plants on two sides.  The inside one that I drew is of a living room inside of  Fallingwater. After we finished drawing, the sky was turning dark, so we went back to the High Meadow to have our dinner.

On the second day, we went to a workshop which is near the High Meadow to make glasses. We needed to make the glasses using paper. The teacher taught us to sketch before you started making any item. The glasses that I made was a pixel MLG glasses, was based on a video game. Then we went back to Fallingwater once again to draw the outside of the Fallingwater right after our lunch. Since this is a civil engineering summer camp, it will involve a lot of drawing, especially drawing architecture. After that, we had an activity where we needed to make a shelter for an 1 inch big bear figure in the area of the road that I drew in the first day that can protect from other animals. We only got 1 jund of sticky, and you could get material around us like leafs, sticks, rocks… so I built a shelter in the middle of two big two rocks, I use some stick to hold in the under of the house.

On the third day, we went to Norman Robert Foster’s 1900s living place where it has become a museum, Norman Robert Foster is the person who designed the HSBC Building.  We had a tour guide who explained everything about the house. After that we headed outside. It was an open place where we needed to draw again. We stayed there almost the whole day.

In the fourth day, we started at some paperwork, we needed to draw and measure some square-based 3-D shape, the teacher taught us how to drew it in 2D and 3D in the paper. Then we drew a fruit that chosen by teacher and I got a pepper, we needed to drew the top, the side and the cutted side after our lunch. After the dinner, we went back to Fallingwater to got an idea in there for making the concrete in the next day.

In the fifth day, we made our own concrete the whole day, every persons’ concrete was in a cuboid shape, so my design was making a square hole in one of the corner of the cuboid and in the middle of every square hole, there had a cuboid column in it. It liked making the concrete by your own.

In the last two days we had a project that we redesigned an small open area to a photostopping spot that it can take in the rainy and snowy day, it’s like a small shelter, my design was making a 45 degree ceiling to let the rain pour it in one way and four cuboid column in each corner of the ceiling, we have the time for design is a whole day. Then we presented the whole summer camp in your own work and experience with all your assignment to the director of Fallingwater.

After the summer camp, my big brother and I took greyhound bus back to philadelphia and go back home. I have a really good experience in this summer camp, because engineering is my favourite things and the experience in the summer camp, it will be useful for my future.

Posted by Alex Lee Chan in English 2 · Pahomov · C Band on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at 11:59 am
Mom, I’m home!

How was my day?

I woke up and thought today was the best day of my life because today is the first day of tenth  is the first day I study  my sister’s school  mov to my sister’s high school, the school that i study before is TRASH, cannot teach me anythings, the students are naughty, the lunch that the school give us are disgusting. It was a nightmare to study  my old school. ow, I am very excited  the first day of school, I can meet new friends. “Good morning, mum” I said, at that moments I still sleepy but my body make me wake up and move to the living room to eat my breakfast, “Oh, good morning, Zoro, what make you so late to wake up, Zoua is already eating her breakfast.” you replies, you always smile to me when you talk, make the morning much more better, even I have some bad things happen before, you always bring the smile to me, your smile make me relax and safe. After I finish my breakfast, I go to school with my sister. Is there has a food store? What does the lunch taste like? … In my head all the question are popping out from my brain about the things in the new school, at that moment i really cannot sit down because of my excited. We arrive at school at 7:16 am, the school starts at 8:15. So we have about one hour to do anythings we want I ask my sister to show me around the school, she nods. She explains every detail where we have walked in the school, she even showed me where my class and my locker are. Then her best friend Saly and Mercy came toward to us and say hello to me and Zoua, my sister always talk about their stories and things when she has free time with me, “Hey Zoua, I want to walk somewhere else, if you have somethings want me, call me.” I said “I will” she reply. on the way to my locker to put some stuff in it.  bullies  bullying a boy I thought Zoua’s school do not have bullies, I  just stand  not help the student who get bullied I  toward them and said “what are you doing here?” I said, “none of your business,” they push me  the floor like I am blocking the way, then a teacher come by. he teacher saw the bullies push me on the floor  call the bullies . “Thank, “ the student who just got bully said, “I am Kama, 10th grade,” “Nice to meet you Kama, I am Zoro, I am new here and I am 10th grade too,” That’s how I meet my first friend, Kama in the first day at school. Then the bell ring, which mean class is ready to start, “Hey Zoro, I think you are in my class, do you want to come with me?” “Sure,” He said

So that’s the first day of my new school, kinda fun, At least the lunch in the new school is yummy.

My Brand New Life

Posted by Alex Lee Chan on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 1:30 pm

Before the time that is the last day of secondary 3’s life has come, I have a feeling that I will go back to Philadelphia where I born,I will leave my close friends in Hong Kong, I will leave my family in Hong Kong, I will miss my classmates in Hong Kong. Then, the day come, the day I saw my classmates one last time, the day I don’t want to have, but suddenly, this happen.

At the end of my last day of school, Jeff, one of my classmate, say to come to room 104(my classroom), when I heard that, I was shocked, I didn’t have any activities after school, then I follow him. When I go into the classroom, I see there are decorations all over the classroom, and there had a lot of food on the desk, even had a cake too. All my classmates were singing ‘See You Again’, along with the computer. Then, Jeff said, ‘This is the last day of your school day, we want to celebrate you, like a fell well party,’ After I heard that, my tears nearly came out of my eyes. After that, they start talked about me past 3 years, and they even gave a lot of presents to me. Before the time that was the last day of secondary 3’s life has come, I had a feeling that I will go back to Philadelphia where I was born, I will leave my close friends in Hong Kong, I will leave my family in Hong Kong, I will miss my classmates in Hong Kong. Then, the day had come, the day I saw my classmates one last time, the day I didn’t want to have, but suddenly, this happened.

I was very happy that they said goodbye like this, then we started to eat, there washed fried chicken, rice-I don’t know why they bought rice to a party-, cake, chocolate, etc. It was great that has a lot of food in a party, some of my classmates even played with the cake, I really didn’t mind. We even played some music while we were eating, it was like we are going to ‘destroy’ the classroom.

After we finished the eating, we went back to our own houses, while I was in the middle of the road to my house, I cried secretly, I didn’t want my classmates see me cry, I will miss my classmates and teacher at school, and this was the best day before I go back to Philadelphia, I will miss my ‘big’ family in Hong Kong.

Two weeks after the crazy party, it was the time to go back to where I born, Philadelphia, before the day we went to airport, we had already packed all our stuff into the luggage, We even took my bicycle too, but most of it were my clothes, and some of my favourite anime and Pokemon things. Then, we went to the airport, ready to leave Hong Kong and , my aunt and my grandma were in the airport too! They came here to give a farewell to us, and they cried when we left the gate. After that, we went into a plane, and stayed in the plane for about 12 hours. My legs almost broke because I had to sit for about 12 hours without moving my legs, it was a nightmare.
After 12 hours, the plane had landed in Chicago, ready to change plane from Chicago to Philadelphia, but we were late and we missed the plane. The lastest plane would be the next day, so after 5 hours, we finally found a hotel that we could stay in Chicago, so we stayed one night in the Chicago.
The next day, we woke up about eleven o’clock and went back to the airport to wait the lastest plane that go to Philadelphia. And we finally made it, we took the lastest plane, but it was already evening, so when we arrived at the Philadelphia airport, it was 11 pm, and then we went to our hotel that we booked before, finally we could rest now.
