Rosemarie Knibbe Capstone

My name is Rosemarie Knibbe and my capstone mentor has been Ms. Hull. I chose her to be my mentor because she is my advisor and has heard me talk about my relationship with the youth group and understands my role there. I also had an out of school mentor, Kirsten Mertus. My relationship with Kirsten is not through her job but through my youth group. She is a youth leader there and has been a part of my life since I was in middle school. I selected her to be my outside mentor because she would be helping me pull together the retreat and she has an understanding of how the event would have to play out.

My capstone was to organize and lead a girls weekend retreat with my church's youth group. I also after the weekend I put together a guide on how to plan the retreat. I learned that there is a lot more planning that goes into these events than I thought. Other than that I learned the skills of how to pull together and event and how to make sure that all aspects work out.

Bibliography:

+ Graceful- Emily P Freeman

Freeman, Emily. Graceful. Letting go of your try-hard life. Grand Rapids: Revell, 2012. Print.

This source provides information about the message that the retreat is going to be centered around. I actually found this book which inspired me to make the message what this book is about. I wanted to find something that was relatable to the girls in their current lives and this book covers that. The source has been super helpful for me to figure out how to put my lesson together and how I can best approach the topic.

+ Redefining Beautiful- Jenna Lucado and Max Lucado

Lucado, Jenna, and Max Lucado. Redefining Beautiful. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 2009. Print.

I chose this book because the topic really relates to things that girls during their teenage years struggle with. I wanted to make sure that they get the most out of this weekend and this book will help me to know what to say. This book covers a lot of different topics about what real beauty is and how to embrace who you are. These are core things that teenage girls need to know.

+ Bible

The Bible . Crossway Bibles, 2007. Print.

I used the Bible to find verses that apply to the theme. In my religion (christianity), the bible is the guide full of how to live your life to honor God. I chose this because I can’t have a retreat with lessons and not use the bible since it is the foundation of our beliefs.

+ Previous retreat packet

Ethridge, Shannon, and Stephen Arterburn. Girls Retreat May 6&7 2011 adapted from Every Young Woman's battle. 2011. Print.

This source is incredibly useful. This is the packet that they used for lessons in the previous years when they had a retreat. To me I was so excited that I was able to get my hands on this. I wanted to  be able to base what I did on previous things that worked. This packet will show me how things were done before so that I will have a better idea about how the lessons should work.

+ Previous retreat schedule

Heather, Cobb. Girl’s retreat Schedule. 2010. Print.

Along with the retreat packet this was also super helpful. I wasn’t able to remember everything that we did. I also couldn't remember how it was broken down time wise. I am going to use this, and replicate a similar schedule. Previously the time frames worked and so I now know how to make the weekend pan out and have it be a good time for everyone.

+ Teach the Ordinary Person’s Guide to teaching Students the Bible

Jackson, Allen. Teach the Ordinary Person's Guide to Teaching Students the Bible. Clarity Publishers, 2008. Print.

I am not a person who has had distinct bible classes since I was in middle school. My biblical knowledge is not as vast as people who are older and study it. This book is helpful in showing me how to teach and run a lesson without worrying about not being taught how.

+ Praying in Color

MacBeth, Sybil. Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God. Paraclete Press, 2007. Print.

A big struggle in the christian faith is the manor of praying and a lot of times it can be a stumbling block for people. There is the distractions that show up and make it hard to talk to God. This book as been super helpful to me in how to pray in a way that will enable you to stay focused on your conversation with God and to also remember to pray throughout the day. I chose to add this because I want to somehow show the girls this way of doing things.

+ 4 questions event planning

“4 questions to help Youth Ministry Event planning." Youthmin.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://youthmin.org/4-questions-to-help-youth-ministry-event-planning/>.

This site was helpful for me to get in the mindset that I needed to be in. It had me question what my motives were and what I wanted to achieve. It gave me a good idea of what kind of things the weekend should make happen. I do wish that the site had more things to think about but for now it works well.

+Crazy Love

Chan, Francis. Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God. 1st ed. David C. Cook, 2008. Print.

This book is all about Gods love for us and how vast it is. That is one of the main themes of all the lessons and this book will help make clear how to say those things. It will also help me know those things and apply them to my life.
