Aniya Linder Capstone

For my senior project also known as Capstone, I organized and hosted an art auction to raise money to buy feminine hygiene products for homeless and less fortunate women. This event took place on March 23rd, 2018 in the cafe of Science Leadership Academy. As a young woman who is fairly poor, I could understand what it is like to struggle to buy tampons and pads that are suitable for me. For someone who is less fortunate than me to try to survive is a terrible thing to imagine. I feel that it is my duty along with other women to help other women accomplish anything they feel is right. The name that I came up with to give the public an idea of what this charity is about is “Lady River.” To me, the Lady River is to represent women diversity. The struggles that women have to overcome are unimaginable and diverse so that is what is in that river. Rivers are flexible and never know what you're going to get from them nevertheless they are beautiful. I was able to obtain more than 50 pieces of art from amazing artists of different backgrounds. With the help of friends and Braskem Lady River made $1,200 and is still continuing to make for money by selling shirts, photography, and small paintings. With the money raised and the products donated I want to create bags with the essential products and give them to different shelters in Philly. When I leave SLA I plan to continue Lady River. I want to create a website that allows people to make cash donations and send product donations so that Lady River will meet their daily demands. I was looking for a site to use that I could make a mass invitation to the art auction. I typed in Google's search engine and that was the first one to come up. I wanted to find the most efficient way to RSVP guest and this was the way. This website is the best because they walk you through the process, offer free invites, and have really good reviews. The free event that they allow you to make gives you a lot of freedom to be creative with the formatting and the theme of the event, unlike other websites. Many would ask why not ask people to come by messaging on social media or old fashion mailing on paper and answer would be because people forget things and mailing takes a long time and mail tends to get lost in the postal system. Embroidery, Bolt Printing and. "Basic 100% Cotton TShirt." Design Online Custom Printed Best Deals Basic 100% Cotton Tshirts BD54 | Bolt Printing. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://www.boltprinting.com/productInfo.php?id=BD54. I will be using this company to make the shirts that will be sold at the Lady River Art Auction. This site get the printing done fast, the shipping is inexpensive, and the shirts themselves are inexpensive. There are lots of companies that I could have decided to go to but there is no other shop that charges at the price as this one. They have great reviews. Also this brand does not put their design on the outside of the shirt where my design will be they put the company's logo on the inside. “Bolt Printing” gives you a lot of control of how the shirt will look and they give you a lot of options and thorough description of the materials used for the shirts which most companies don’t. How Do Homeless Women Cope With Their Periods? | NSFWomen. Performed by Women from all over. YouTube. October 18, 2016. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://youtu.be/ABch4VYOJZ0. This video was produced by Bustle and it was to tell people how homeless women cope with their periods. This video is what helped me decide what wanted to do for my capstone because it made me open my eyes a bit more and realize that these women do not have it easy. I believe that being cleaning should not be a luxury. This video is the perfect representation of just that. The way that these women have to try to keep themselves clean when their cycle comes on has led me to think about what I and other people can do for them in the most efficient way possible. Accessed January 26, 2018. http://www.fundraiserinsight.org/articles/host-fundraising-art-auction.html. There are certain things in the art auction that cost a lot of money that I don’t have so I had to figure out ways to raise money and make a huge profit. My initial thought was to do a bake sale but it is time-consuming and expensive to bake and or buy baked goods. However, I found a pretzel factory called “Center City Pretzels” that sells a whole case of pretzels for twelve dollars. I found that if I sold the pretzels for two dollars a piece I could make forty-eight dollars profit based off of the number of pretzels that came in the case. Ibele, Terry. Also, they give you a sample form to use for a silent auction if you are planning on doing one. I did not know how to go about how to do a silent auction but I wasn’t exactly sure. Although none of the sites that I found were credible it was likely that I wasn’t going to find one so it was based on my judgment. "Lunette Menstrual Cups Donated to Charities - Charity Work." Lunette. Accessed January 25, 2018. https://store.lunette.com/pages/giving-back. Lunette is a company that makes menstrual cups and they are a company that is known or donated their products to Nairobi, Kenya. They started “The Cup” project in 2015 to educate girls by helping them with their bodies changing, and providing them with a menstrual cup and that is very important. The biggest problem for girls in Kenya is the lack of proper sanitary protect. Most girls miss one week per month because of their periods. Eventually, they drop out of school earlier than boys. Although I may be catering to homeless women that are fully developed and educated on the menstruation process they both have the same struggle. Lunette is a very important company for my capstone because with research I found that they cater to women that are not able to provide for themselves and or their children. "Overington House Women's Interview." Interview by author. January 12, 18. The “Joy Of Living” also known as the Overington House Services include transitional housing for women with children. We came to the Overington House to donate products to the women there and we also went there to see what feminine hygiene products we could get for them to make their lives easier. Talking to the women at the home made us realize that all though they don't have much they are human and they deserve to get the products that they like. These women were very specific about the kind of products that they wanted and they made it very clear about what they needed from us. Going into their home was very risky because this place is their safe place and then us walking in it expecting to help is very scary for us and them. It was hard to let them know that we are only here to assist them in any way. Ross, MD Elisa. "Tired of Tampons? Here Are Pros and Cons of Menstrual Cups." Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic. This website helped me figure out what menstrual product would best to propose to women that I would encounter. I thought about pads and tampons but then I thought about how those are not products that women could afford on their own. Even the average woman struggles with affording these products. Leaving these products on/in for an extended amount of time is very unsanitary and can also lead to toxic shock syndrome when talking about tampons. With menstrual cups the vaginal pH and beneficial bacteria stay in place, less embarrassing odor, lower costs, less landfill waste, more time in between changes, intercourse is possible with the cup in place, and easy to use. This site was the one I used because it’s straight to the point and it is credible. "School Selection Results." Science Leadership Academy @ Center City. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://scienceleadership.org/. It may be a little silly to use the high school that I attend as one of my resources but without the people in it, I would not have been able to do it without them. I recruited most of my artist from SLA. All of the students at SLA have some sort of artistic and or creative side to them so I know that scouting here would be perfect. I would have done this anywhere else it would be hard to keep track with the people that I am working with in regards to when they will be done with their piece and what they are doing for their piece. "SLA Engineering Division." Inspiring Innovation! Accessed January 26, 2018. http://engineering.sla.org/. In my art auction, I am one of the artists. I wanted to represent a part of African American women in the auction. I etched a design of an African American women with flowers in her hair into wood and then I drilled LED lights through the centers of the flowers, sprinkled artificial snowflakes on the flowers, stained the wood with medium brown protective stainer. I also created a metal box to cover the wires from the LED lights and to act as a frame for the artwork. I would not have been able to do that without the incredibly skilled people in that room. The SLA engineers are great at what they do. I could have gone to somewhere else to do this project but it would have been a lot more expensive and fewer hands on.
