How to Lie With Statistics: Podcast #1

Posted by Ronald Jackson in Statistics - Miles on Friday, May 24, 2013 at 12:37 pm

Group: The Math People (Ronald, Mabintu, and Rugei)
Covered: Chapters 1-4

In this podcast, we discussed our opinions about scenarios and ideas present in chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4. For each chapter, we spent a brief amount of time bringing up a point in the book that we found to be controversial or important pertaining to statistics in the real world. Each member of the group would then respond to the point that was brought up, telling whether we agreed or disagreed with the authenticity of it, and why we felt that way. We kept our debates as professional as possible, respecting everyone's ideas. After we exhausted each scenario, we moved on to the next one.

Podcast Two

Posted by Matthew Ferry in Statistics - Miles on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Group Members: Matt, Max, Bee, Sabrina, Natalee
Chapters Covered: Three, Four, and Five

In this podcast we discussed how researchers graph their findings, utilize means inappropriately, and how house builders build homes to fit the "average" family. We chose these three topics because we found these to be some of the more interesting points covered over the three chapters.

Again, I am unable to upload our podcast directly to SLATE. To access our podcast click here.

How to lie . . . Pt 3

Taina R. and Jamelia B. podcast #3

Discussing chapters 7-10

We give our opinions on the chapters, and how, at times, we find some of the lessons comical since there is a sense of common sense. There wasn't any arguing since we took each others opinions into consideration.

(there were no previous questions to answer)

Henninger, Mcneil, Smith, Fichera - Podcast 2

Posted by Sophia Henninger in Statistics - Miles on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 5:52 pm

Group Members Present:
Dayona Mcneil
Chelsea Smith
Chris Fichera
Sophia Henninger

Discussion:
Today we discussed specific examples used in chapters three, four, five, and six. There was not much arguing, though there was some attempts to clarify how we agree with the book's point.

Specifically, we discussed:
 - statistics of American housing circumstances
 - statistics of child development
 - representation of data can be misleading
 - graphs/graphics can be inaccurate/misleading

Henninger, Mcneil, Smith, Fichera - Podcast 1

Posted by Sophia Henninger in Statistics - Miles on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 7:17 pm

Group Members Present:

Dayona Mcneil

Chelsea Smith

Chris Fichera

Sophia Henninger

Discussion:

Since this was our first podcast we wanted to outline statistics itself and what it means to us. We just introduced ourselves and then everyone individually explained their definition of statistics and what it meant to us. Since this podcast had very little to do with the book itself, there was not much to disagree about.

Podcast #1- Marina, Sierra & Prisilla

Posted by Marina Pyfrom in Statistics - Miles on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 12:01 pm

During the podcast we focused on a lot key points in chapters 1 through 4. They do not go in any particular order. We also related these concepts back to things we learned in class and things that we see in our everyday lives. Enjoy! :)
