Slideshow and Artist's Statement - Emmett Tsai-McCarthy

Posted by Emmett Tsai-McCarthy in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 2:56 pm

I was very excited for this quarter in art, as this was going to be the very first time I could use my computer for art.  I was a little bit disappointed the first time I was going to use my computer for art since the first assignment upon getting was one that required a specific art medium, that being pencil and paper.  But when I was finally able to use it for the mandalas, it was a whole lot of fun.  Being able to use so many tools and colors at my fingertips was what sold me on digital art.
I've also gotten better at shading since last quarter, but it's not just because of my computers versatility.  Although my computer had the bigger impact on my shading abilities, there were two assignments that also helped, them being the optical illusions and shading forms.  It's very easy to see why these assignments had the impact they had on me, as both were literally lessons on shading.  Along with shading, these assignments have gotten me to start drawing in 3 dimensions more than I did before.
I believe this quarter to be the best for my artwork so far, but not just for school work.  I don't mean to sound like a broken recorder, but my artistry has truly gotten better since gaining the ability to draw online and I've been able to start focusing on a goal that I doubted I would even do at all, which was starting my portfolio for college.  Of course, I don't think my artwork is college ready now that I have the means to draw on a screen.  But it was a big step for me and combined with the lessons from this art class, and the stuff I've doing outside of school, will get me even further.

Q2 Pieces for Art

Posted by Cristina Valenzo in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 6:09 pm

For my art pieces this quarter I felt very inspired to use paint as my main art material. I found that when painting I felt very calm. Holding a paintbrush and using my imagination to create art pieces felt very therapeutic for some reason.

When I started my first pieces which was the contour drawing I found it challenging since I couldn't see what I was doing, I kept trying to look but in the end I came out with very unique drawings. Then, coloring them in was also a challenge. It turned out to look completely opposite of what it was originally supposed to be, but I think that’s the beauty of art. You can draw or paint anything and it will still be right because it’s something you created out of your imagination.

Then we went on to our own choice of painting, it was around the time of holidays and I was in the christmas spirit so I decided to paint classical images you would see around the holidays, a snowman and holiday lights. I loved creating and painting these pieces. Afterwards we had to recreate a painting and I instantly knew I wanted to create a Picasso. He is one of my favorite artist for so many reasons. His artis inspiring and I find his blue era inspiring, so I decided to recreate a painting from that era. When creating this piece I learned how important it was to mix colors and blend. In the original price some areas were a lighter blue than other areas so I had to mix in some white in order to get in just right.

Afterwards, we had to illustrate a piece of writing. I knew right away what I wanted to do. I chose a J-cole song called “A Tale of Two Cities” on the song he talks about police-brutality and everything a black man has to go through. He talks about black injustice. I decided to recreate this song by illustrating one of his lines “hands in the air run it” and then “Forgive me father for I have sinned” by painting a man pointing a gun at someone else and saying the line and then above two hands praying with the lyrics next to it. In between of the two grains you can see golden bricks and this image represent the line “I know that everything that glitter ain't gold.” The bricks may be painted gold that doesn’t mean they are valuable. This was one of my favorite drawings. Lastly we had to take pictures and then edit them to show depth. I took three pictures that showed depth then edited them and highlighted and used contrast to further emphasize the depth of the pictures.

Maya Kohl, Quarter 2 Artwork

Posted by Maya Kohl in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 11:26 pm

For my color blind drawings I wanted to express unique coloring for simple show drawn things, to make them stick out in purpose. My blind contour drawings were inspired wit objects or people who have more details than are shown on the surface.
For my own painting, my friend who means a lot to me told me to paint a flower, like a rose. She is a rose to me, but I wanted someone deeper and darker. To me this expresses her to with me. She is so pure like a flower, while I’m dark but still beautiful. When I choose the famous already existing painting I chose it because it screamed mystery to me, that is something that always draws me into something. I enjoyed the colorful fruit to a dull colorless man.
For the illustration to a song, book passage or a quote. I wanted to draw a metaphor to one quote I try to live by, this quote was “you have to be your strongest when you're feeling your weakest.” So in my illustration I tried to portray something beautiful and weak on the inside of a cage. The cage would be your strength to aid you when you’re weak but at the same time not letting the weak parts of you, the butterfly set free.
For my photo editing photos, I chose to make everything in a portrait mode and hiten it, I used the app given to make lines in the macaroons stand out as well as other images. I choses these images because of their difference in similarities. Three out of the five images are baked goods, while the other two are of winter. Two of my favorite things, winter and baked goods.
I wish overall with this quarter I managed my time more wisely, and spent proud time on some of these assignments more than others. I used a lot of rulers and measuring for proportion, with my man with a green apple painting I measured out some of the lines making up the back and himself. With the caged butterfly for the bars I used a ruler. Which I never do. Overall I thought this quarter was full of new experiences and creative thinking I'm proud of it.

Advance Art slideshow Quarter Two

In this unit, I have created 5 different types of art creation. We start off with Blind contour is when you look up at something in a draw without look down on the paper. This was very hard for, because usually I won't make my line and curve nicely by a look at it. Then we had to add color to the cantor. As right now I was disappointed the way I color the cantor. The cantor has helped me understand how difficult an art has to work. Then our second assignment you had to Choose your own painting and I recreate a nice painting of Boohbah from my childhood so it was a great connection. It turns out to do nicely, but painting was very hard because you want to keep in line. After a look at the painting I know this was going to be great have a great connection. Recreate an art piece I wanted to do something that inspires everyone and I remember our first black president has great inspiration because how he has carried himself. President Obama has inspired me since I was a little kid. I member watch t.v hoping he was going to be our first president. Illustration from a piece art I choose one my favorite album born sinner from J Cole. The album helps me go through hard loss basketball game. Born Sinner has a true story behind every song. It a story of J Cole up and down in life. This might be my favorite assignment to do in this quarter. Photo editing our last assignment for the quarter. I didn't understand the connection between the art and photo editing. But as my editing it has a lot because you have to fix the color contrast and make people really look at one part of the photo which is call depth of the field. This assignment will help in the future because I want to go into Photography. Overall, I have learned a lot of about a turn assignment in on time. I also have reflected in my art. I have learned it's not easy to just believe in skills. Most of the art I create I have inspiration from my childhood because I can remember the good time when I use to go home and watch t.v. Then I have a conversation with my friends who gave me ideas.

Week 10 - Slideshow • Artist's statement

Posted by Kayah Chisholm-McVay in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 8:53 pm

Over the course of quarter two we were assigned to create a variety of different drawings and photos, being: Blind contour drawings, colored blind contour drawings, choice painting, recreation of an art piece, Illustration of a writing, and Photo editing.

Our first assignment was blind contour drawings, we had to pick ten subjects we wanted to draw and then gather ten sheets of printer paper and draw each subject. Contour drawings are drawn from a starting point and without looking down at the paper. You figure out where your starting point is going to be, pull up the image or look at your subject and draw it to the best of your ability without taking your drawing utensil off the paper until you're completely done. For the first assignment I decided to draw items I saw around the art room.

Second, the colored contour drawings were done off our previous contour drawings, more specifically we had to take our contour drawings we had drawn for our first assignment and color them. I colored my country drawings with multiple colors, and gave some contour drawings a background. I specifically did that, to make the drawings more appealing to the eye. One thing I took away from these two contour drawings, was that not everything is going to turn out exactly how you want it to turn out the first or even the second time. Although, you may want to change your idea or subject your, sometimes it’s best to stick on the same path (as said in the direction about keeping you pencil on the paper at all times) and find a better way.

Third, was the choice painting, you were required to choose an art piece of interest, and paint it on a medium sized canvas, which is by far larger than 2 pieces of printer paper put together. I chose to paint a monster from the Tv show called “The Mist” because it seemed very cool and interesting, also the monster was the main part of the Tv show, and due to my strong interest in “The Mist”, I wanted to find something that would respable the whole Tv show. One thing I took away from this, is being able to go deeper into detail with whatever you may be analysing or drawing. For instance, I didn't just draw the base or an outline of the monster. I drew the outside fog, and I painted the fog with a mix of black, gray, yellow, and white paint, to give my painting a more supernatural feel. Overall I put as much detail as I could, to show and give you the feeling of what was happening in the moment when this monster appeared in the Tv show.

Fourth, we had to recreate a piece of art, this piece of art can be anything from a drawing you found online to a drawing or painting you or someone else did last year.  I recreated a painting from a famous artist. This was a painting of a complex multi- colored forest with deer throughout the painting. Instead of painting the original painting i decided to draw it with colored pencils, because it was easier. After doing this drawing, I realize that even the most complex art pieces can be done just as well with the simplest materials.

The fifth assignment consisted of illustrating a piece of writing. Meaning you have to find a piece of writing whether that's in a book or online, and illustrated in anyway you prefer to illustrate the writing. For this assignment I chose to illustrate the quote “Be sure to taste your words before you spit them out”. I illustrated this out in the form of a drawing, because while words get a point r message across well, I think portraying a message/point through a picture makes the message even more powerful than it originally was. Something I took away was the ability to better portray a message through a detailed drawing.

In conclusion quarter two brought a lot of new perspectives into me life. Last year quarter I learned about time management and being precise. Whereas, this quarter I learned about not being perfect but doing the best you can do, drawing/creating exactly what is asked to be created, making due with the materials you have to make your art pieces, etc. Most significantly I learned how to tell a story and a meaning throughout the simplest and the most complex pieces of art.

Quarter 2 Artist's Statement

Posted by Naima DeBrest in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 8:47 pm

For this quarter I we worked on pieces that I really enjoyed. I was able to wrok on blind contour drawings, painting from reference, recreating a piece of art, and creating an illustration from a piece of writing.

The assignment that I was the most unfamiliar with was the blind contour drawing. I had never heard of that style of art before and I was nervous to try it. The hardest part about it was making sure that I didn't look at the paper while I was drawing. Once I kind of got t enough of it and was finished my drawing I was afraid that they didn't' look like they were supposed to look like. But when I looked up how professional artist did blind contour drawings I knew that they were not supposed to be perfect. My favorite Blind contour drawings that I id were the portraits of people.

My next favorite assignment was recreating a piece of art. For this I decide to pick my Aunt as my artist. She has been crocheting since she was a young child and she has perfected her craft.  About 8 years ago she taught me how to crochet and it has been something that we have been able to bond over ever since. One of her specialties are neck cowls so I decided to make one of those.

My next favorite assignment of the quarter was making an illustration from a piece of writing. As soon as I saw this assignment I knew what piece of writing I was going to do. I picked my favorite short story called The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. It was written almost 100 years ago but I still love to read it. It is about a man who gets stuck on an island with a crazy hunter and his servant who play the "most dangerous game" and hunt people. So the story follows him surviving through their endeavors to kill him. Since there are three character sin the book I decide to draw those three men. I have never actually drawn males before so I had to look up how to draw their bodies and muscles.

All in all I really enjoyed the assignments of this quarter and I look forward to the assignments and adventures of next quarter.

This quarter I focused on creating art that described how I felt in the moment. Whatever came to mind, I just made it. A lot of the art that I created during this quarter were based off of television shows that I watched.

I can honestly say that I enjoyed crocheting the halter top the most. Making the halter top involved doing something that I love, crocheting. Crocheting is something that helps me relieve stress, so I took the opportunity with open hands. Another good thing is that I was able to use the halter top as a project and earn credit for it while also profiting off of it.

Anything that involved me coloring was something that I somewhat disliked. Usually when I draw, I like to keep my artwork black and white. Unfortunately, some of the assignments required me to color them in for the final presentation. I am not the best at shading things so that frustrated me a bit and the overall process is just so time consuming.

This entire quarter was pretty hard and stressful for me but I can say that I am proud of the artwork that I produced. Growing up I was a big fan of art and I somewhat got that spark back creating artwork this quarter. Hopefully I can keep up the good work and allow other people to enjoy my artwork as well.

During this quarter, the majority of the art we drew was created by us. In the beginning of the quarter, we drew blind contour drawings which is a concept artists use to practice their drawing skills. Blind contour drawings are when you're looking at a an object and not at your paper and you attempt to draw the object as best as
you can. My other drawing after the contour drawing was a painting of my own creation. It represents how wounded the world is, and all we really do to fix it is "put a band aid on it." Metaphorically.

My personal preference for materials for materials and techniques is using larger paintbrushes to make soft undertone for the base. Let that dry. And then from there paint a lighter color on top. I do this because sometimes, colors don't mix very well. So instead of mixing them in a pallet, I just paint over what's already there.

• What important things happened during making art the quarter?
Something important that I learned is that you can make magic out of your mistakes. In my "Heal the World" drawing, I first attempted to draw the ground, I also attempted to draw first. But, turns out, the brown was more of a darker red. So instead of starting over, I made the red a little lighter and made it blood. It saved me so much time and frustration.

Art takes time. You can't rush it. I tried gunning through my assignments thinking that they were good enough to turn in but looking back, there are always improvements to be made.

Week 10 Art Project -Brendan Barnes

Posted by Brendan Barnes in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 3:49 pm

For week one we did blind contour  drawings and it was kind of hard for me because I was so used to looking at the paper when I was drawing. Then I didn’t really understand that it was supposed to look messed up so I was throwing a lot of the really bad ones in the trash and starting over. For week three we had to color in our contour drawings and I forgot to submit my work so I was walking around with a zero for it but once I realized it I quickly submitted it.

On week 4 I had to paint, I chose to do perry the platypus  because he is my favorite character from a tv show that I watched when I was a kid, I had a lot of fun working on it because I had to mix the colors together to create the colors that I really wanted. Week 5 and 6 was my worst week this quarter because I tried to recreate the American flag but then I left my flag in my locker and since we had a lot of snow days I was not able to really work on it so I didn’t get a good grade on it, but I choose to do the American flag because it is a symbol itself but within it there are multiple symbols, I just find that to be really cool.

The assignment for week 7 and 8 turned out to be the best artwork I’ve done probably in my whole life, I chose to do Chief Keef who is one of my favorite rappers that are from Chicago. I feel like I did it perfectly. I got points off because for some reason it was turned sideways on the pdf but not on the normal google doc. Week 9 we had to edit a photo and add depth of field to it. To me it was a good way to end off the marking period. I chose to focus on a picture that said “Neither God” and it didn’t take my long to do that but the picture had to be 2 hours of work so I spent the rest of the time add special effects to it.

I would also like people to know that I don’t consider myself to be an artist but I honestly do feel way more confident about drawing since I joined Ms.Hull’s art class, I make sure just to try and have fun with it. For every single one of my pieces of art I never once said I couldn’t do it and I just tried my best.
