Art Presentation Q3

Posted by Horace Ryans in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at 4:11 pm

For this quarter and art, we didn't really use any paint for our pieces. They were majority hand drawn, self-inspired, and required a lot of time. My two favorite pieces were the shading and the Mandala drawing. When I began the drawing of the shaded figure, I was not confident at all that it would turn out the way it did. I knew my art skills weren't the best, and I had to learn the concept of light placement, but seeing how it took me a couple hours and a lot of erasing, it came out a lot better than expected. The mandalas I like because they are more colorful than the rest of my drawing. Although other people drew shapes and figures. I went for the spiral effect, the repetition of colors is relaxing to me. Also, I just like looking at them. Ms.Hull gave us the option to create our Mandalas off of our computers. Knowing myself, and having an understanding of what my art skills were, I chose this as an alternative to drawing them by hand. Although this isn't a technique or a material, it's a resource that I used to make my art beautiful. It gave me alternative that made me comfortable enough to present my work. Something that I learned this quarter, and I keep telling myself. Art takes time. You get what you put into it. I know some pieces I rushed through because Art isn't my specialty, but it's fun. I need to take my time to make something good. I'm proud of my work, and I hope you enjoy it as well.

Advanced Art Q3 - Gavin Lane

ARTIST'S STATEMENT: This is a collection of all the artwork that I have made over the period of Quarter 3. Most of the art that I created were illustrations using pencil. I would say that during the course of this quarter I learned some very important and useful new techniques, especially in the field of shading. This skill specifically was used a great deal by me this quarter.

Zeniah's Q3 Artist Statement

Posted by Zeniah Navas in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 3:40 pm

Hey, it’s ya girl Z!

This art class continues to change my perspective of art for the better. The ability to be able to take your time while making art pieces so you can show yourself is impacting.. Throughout the course, I’ve learned how to do different methods of drawing, painting, and simply creating art. The first two weeks assignment was to create a bicycle drawing. The task was to draw a bike as if it was a real one. It was very difficult at first to not want to trace anything, but I was able to use my imagination to visual it. I decided to make my bike black and red because those are most common. I tried creating good handlebars, but it did not work out as planned. The way I made the circles so large was with a pan. I used different materials to make my bike. The next task was very fun to do. It was the “Optical Illusion”. I always enjoy being able to draw something that reminds me of my childhood, it’s something I love to do. I like it because art always reminds me of the little girl I once was who loved to color. I used a ruler and the outline of a brick wall to be able to do my optical illusion. I, used, another circular object to create the circle. I colored it in marker because I knew it would make it pop out more. We didn’t have to only create one, but two illusions. The first was my own and the second I had to follow directions. I paid close attention to the instructions to do it. I used a number 2 pencil for the shading. After this, we had to create an eye drawing.. This assignment was a little difficult in finding exactly how I wanted to do it. I knew I didn’t want to do something that looked basic. I researched eye drawings and found one I actually liked. I knew it was going to be hard at first, but I continued to use it as inspiration for my own. I drew it onto the the paper with a pencil and had to erase many times. I did it lightly because if it was dark it would not have came out how I wanted it to. I used shading to create that real eye effect. My last piece is really my favorite. It’s a wolf mandala. I really wanted to do something different because I knew others were going to be the typical circle mandalas. I drew everything with pencil and outlined everything with marker. It was more complex than I had originally planned. & Once again, this is me; Zeniah Navas.

Sharron Norton- Week 10 Artist Statement

Posted by Sharron Norton in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 12:02 am

In the Fourth quarter of my art class, we were giving 5 major assignments and these art pieces resulted in the finishing of a Bike, Optical Illusion sketch, an eye, Shaded forms, and lastly a Mandala.  During the process of this task to complete, my creativity was unleashed. From these assignments, I was able to truly have faith in myself as an artist and test my resourceful talent that has been hidden for so long.

This marking period we really focused on shading. I've learned that Shading is the process of adding value to create the illusion of form, space, and most importantly - light in a drawing. When executed correctly, shading can make a drawing appear three dimensional and create a convincing image. To me, it was so amazing because i never thought that I would ever be able to create something like that. And techniques that was required to be used for applying shading to an object are quite varied. Each technique produces a different texture and "feel" to the drawing. Thanks to my art teacher, I was able to already have knowledge of them. They are called: High dark, Low dark, Medium, Low light, and High light.

Closing, I would like to express how much I have grown as an artist. From these trails and errors, I was able to learn at my own pace and experience the true life as an Artist. The only thing I would say that I had trouble was managing my time. My goal for next marking period is to turn my assignments in on time.

Quarter 3

Posted by Hamidou Doumbia in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 9:50 pm

This quarter might have been the longest quarter yet. We had five different type of art pieces. We create a bike, optical Illusion, Shaded form, draw an eye, and make a mandala. The bike project was different because it was hard trying to freehand draw a bike. It didn't turn out to be the nice bike in the world but I proud that I did something new with a copy from the internet. The optical Illusion seemed to be hard when I first tried to choose the optical illusion online. I wasn't that proud of my Optical illusion I thought I could do better. The shade form I had this one three time over and over again. My first time it didn't look right at all because I'm horrible at shading. My final product was very nice I thought I did very well on. The eye drawing might be my best drawing this quarter. The reason I believe this because detail I put on eye made a lot different. Mandala was a successful project with the cool picture all over the website shown that this might be the hardest to draw I found one I really like and we you add color it changes it so much.

Quarter 3 Artwork Slideshow

Posted by Lauryn Lewis in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 8:06 pm

During this quarter, we worked on five different projects in art class. The different projects that we worked on were the bike drawing, the optical illusion, shading forms, the eye drawing, and the mandala.

The bike drawing took the longest to do because we were not drawing an ordinary bike. The bike had to imitate a real bike with somewhat 3D features. I was okay with the outcome of my bike. The only thing I disliked was how long it took to color the bike.

The optical illusion was hard because I did not have the different pencils that give the drawings such a detailed look. I had to do the optical illusion over about three times before I got it right.

The shading forms were nothing like I thought they would be. I imagined them to be really hard and frustrating. After doing some research online, I was able to complete the shading forms with ease.

The eye drawing was also another project that I thought would be difficult. I wanted to make sure that the eye actually looked like my eye. I also wanted it to mimic an artist I had previously seen on Instagram that had created the most beautiful eye I had ever seen. I tried my best to do the same and I think I did a good job for my first time.

Last, but not least, was the mandala. The mandala was my favorite project because it was the most creative. I enjoyed adding my personal touch to the mandala and coloring it in was not stressful at all. It also reminded me of the adult coloring book I had been working on recently.

Overall, the quarter was not much to stress about. For the most part, the projects were pretty easy and not stressful to do.

Q3 Art Work

Posted by Cristina Valenzo in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 5:28 pm

This quarter I feel like a lot of the art work we did had a lot to do with lines and shading. In the most of the art pieces I found myself shading a lot and adding different amounts of pressure to my pencil in order to create different shades. In my opinion I feel like the artwork that I really saw myself doing this was in the Eye Drawing, I had to apply different shading in order to achieve a realistic looking drawing. I really like how it turned out and this is the art piece that I am most proud off.

This quarter most of the art work was assigned and we couldn't really choose our artwork, however we did get to create our own Mandel’s and I personally really liked the ones I created online. The app that I used allowed oneself to be creative and create intricate shapes . I really learned about shading and how to apply different pressures with a pencil this quarter.

Art Quarter 3 Slideshow and Artist Statment

Posted by Naima DeBrest in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 2:29 pm

In this quarter we had to draw a bike, make optical illusions, shaded forms, draw an eye, and make a mandala. I really enjoyed the projects that we did. I really put my best foot forward and worked with the skills that the assignments were trying to teach me.

I didn't think that I would like the bike drawing but I was able to complete it. I wanted to draw a motorcycle at first  but Ms. Hull said that we couldn't. I picked this yellow and blue bike because I liked the basket.

The next piece of artwork was the shading form. I think that this was the section that I needed the most help with. In all my drawing experience I have had trouble with shading. I think that my favorite one was the sphere.

The next was the eye and I loved the way that this one turned out. I was able to use the mirror to recreate my eye. I think that the video that we used as reference was really helpful.

My favorite project of the quarter was the mandala. I decided to make mine by hand. I found it very peaceful and centering to draw it. It gave me time to kind of meditate while I was coloring it in.

Quarter 3 Maya Kohl's Artwork

Posted by Maya Kohl in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 11:31 am

In this unit we were asked to create a bike drawing, an optical illusion drawing, shading forms drawing, an eye drawing and a mandala with color. I like my work personally to have a lot of shading and color blending but I also prefer using pencil I think the black and white effect leaves room for imagination. With the bike drawing I wanted to make it with older types of bike because I like the vintage look it has. It reminds me of my mom’s bike.
For the optical illusions the first one I chose to do a more rounded out illusion because I thought it looked like a jewelry chain piece and that interest me. For the second one that was given as an example from the assignment but I liked how it combined this assignment and next weeks assignment which was shading forms. I enjoyed this assignments because I learned more control on how much pressure to apply on the pencil as well as making my images look somewhat 3D.
For the eye drawing I chose to do a friends. In the original assignment you were supposed to draw your own eye. I found myself always frustrated with the way my eyes fold and to draw them I felt could frustrate me more. This was my favorite assignment because I felt I could really enjoy it. To me the eye is more than just an eye.
For the mandala’s I wanted to create the design and color by the elements. The sun, water and a flower for earth. Some techniques I enjoyed using this unit were color blending and shading for a shadow effect and more ombre effect. I also enjoyed the simiatry of the mandala. I prefer pencil I find the texture to be easiest and most creative to work with in a lot of different types of art.

Week 10 • Artist's statement • Slideshow• Blog

Posted by Kayah Chisholm-McVay in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 9:49 pm

In the third quarter we were assigned to create eye, optical illusion, bike, mandala and shading drawings. The main focus throughout these drawings was shading. More specifically being able to distinguish different shades of color and then apply your knowledge of shading through the assigned art pieces.

Week 1-2 we were assigned to draw a picture of a bike. We had to find a picture of any type of bike you wanted and draw it to the last detail in full scale. For this drawing I chose an old fashion bike, because I admire the look of those types of bikes. First, I drew a draft of my bike on a piece of printer paper. Then I had to the bigger version, which was extremely hard. I spent about two days putting detail into the bike. Although, this drawing was very time consuming, I recognized that something like this was meant to take the amount of time it did. One thing I took away from drawing my bike, was, to not doubt myself. While drawing my bike I would continuously draw a certain part until I thought it was perfect. By the time it was done, there was an extreme amount of detail, yet I still felt I need more. I was proud of the outcome, but I wanted to make it better. Sometimes you just need to take the time you have, put in the effort, and if you're already proud with the drawing go with it.  Which I can personally say, definitely paid off.

Week 3-4 we had to draw two optical illusions, one being a square and the other being a sphere. First I drew my sphere, I started to think an optical illusion of a sphere was the same as a 3D circle. I watched a video on how to turn a sphere into an optical illusion, then showed Mrs Hull. With advice and redirection from Mrs. Hull I quickly realized I was drawing my sphere incorrectly. My shading was off, and what I thought was an optical illusion, wasn't. Eventually I was able to my sphere correctly, and had no problem with the square. I learned to, not refer to a video of someone draw a optical illusion version of a sphere, but rather look at a picture. This is because the person and myself had very different perspective of the sphere. I wasn't looking at what the person was looking at for them to draw the sphere the way they did. I was only looking at how the sphere was being drawn. Where as, if i'm look at a picture of sphere, I already know what it looks like and can tell that which direction im looking from. That way I could draw from my own perspective.

Week 5-6, shading forms. This assignment wasn’t particularly hard or time consuming. Following direction from the given pdf and taking what I learned the last two weeks, it was pretty easy. One thing I was proud of was the way the shading forms turned out. One thing I took away was, when you put in the effort to get better in a concept, whether that means practicing or asking question, you will always get better in that concept.

Week 7 we were assigned to draw an eye. However not just any eye, our own eye. We had to take a picture of our eye and then in as much as possible, draw your eye. When drawing my eye, I decided to veer away from the examples given and really take a look at my eye and see what was really going on. This really helped when trying to my eye not necessarily perfect but realistic in my own way. One thing I took away from this assignment was, a lot of people consider the term ‘realistic” as being something that is perfect, practical , real, as if there is only one version of what an eye looks like. However, there are many types of realistic, as well as many interpretation of what it means. In terms of my eye drawing, my interpretation of a realistic eye drawing, may not match others, but my version of what an eye looks like only pertains to me, considering its a drawing of my eye. Just like my version of real may never be your version of real, whether we have a similar mindset or not.

Week 8-9 was the last drawing, and we had to create a mandala. This was something new to me, so I decided to draw something low in complication but not simple. After drawing my mandala, I felt as though it looked a bit rough. I continued to had detail, and make certain part stick out more than others. I also decided to color it with a variety of different colors,  to make my mandala more appealing. I purposely made my color selection very eccentric, to give my mandala an exotic look, where different shapes and figures that normally wouldn't go together, are put together. One thing I recognized was that mandala’s in general look very exotic and normally, I wouldn't have given my mandala a colorful but odd look. However, the type of art mandala is, influenced my explore my artistic ability and forms of expressing art.
