This was my final result for my rubber stamp. It took me a while to eventually end at this as I tried and failed many times. At first I fell into the easy trap of trying to put too much into a limited space and platform. Overall a good stamp gets a quick message across that doesn’t take too much though which I struggled with. I was trying to make stamps that portrayed a story rather than a billboard which you can look at and just understand.

Another problem that came with me trying to convey too much was a lack of positive and negative space. I made a ton of lines which I think is also indicative of how much I was working harder and not smarter. So after finally ditching my idea of making an incredibly complicated staircase with no negative, positive space, nothing I came to this heart. It pretty much my heart with the marks of a basketball, which I know is a shocker!!!! But I mean it. I wanted to get something in there about my family but I think I did a good job of getting my message across and realizing that it is just a rubber stamp. Not my life story. One problem I had with negative space was really separating everything from each other. You can have the background be intended to be negative space but not really be. Also the concept of no lines kind of messed me up but also helps in a way. It kind of stops you from going in too deep on your message like I was trying to do especially with the only possible letters having to be of the bubble variety that helps.

Negative space is the part of an image that is empty and works with the more full parts of an image (positive space) to draw your attention toward something. it helps compliment a part of the picture to give the picture more meaning and emotion. in my image, both negative and positive space is shown. on the left side, the black is negative space because it's the surrounding image while the main image is the positive and is the focus point. same with the right side, the blue is the negative space.

Negative and positive space is important because it allows an artist to draw attention toward something that wouldn't be noticed right away. for instance, if you wanted to get a point across, as an artist, you wouldn't use only positive space because there would be too much to look at and nothing would stick out most. but if you use both positive and negative and used the negative to surround your main point, it would stick out more. it can also add meaning to the image.

Our assignment was to create a stamp or logo that represented us. The point of having this logo was so that we could then have a symbol for which we could be recognized by. We had to figure out ways to use negative and positive space to our advantage.

When I was thinking of my logo I thought of things that I like, feel strong about and do. In the beginning I was thinking of do something more complex like a surfer and palm tree forming a K but I am not a very good drawer and it was hard to tell what it was. I then thought of using the sign language sign for K because K is the first letter of my name and because the sign looks like a peace sign. After looking at my teachers logos, Marcie Hull and Steven Herrera, I was inspired to create a more simple logo that involved my initials, like theirs. I first started by sketching and trying out anything I could think of. Eventually I came across the idea of having the B and K be next to each other. After thinking some more I thought I could put a T across the center making the B and K clearer. I decided to use negative space for the T as it allowed me to include meanwhile being discreet. After looking at it for a bit I decided to add a rectangle above the top of the T in positive place to make it more clear and because I thought it looked nice. By now I had it all on my computer because I found it easier to navigate negative and positive space this way. I finally decided that I was going to add the G in positive space at the bottom part of the B. I finally liked my logo so I decided that I didn’t want to change much so I just cleaned it up to make it look nicer.

It was a hard process to understand negative and positive space for me as I had never thought of images and things in this way and it was a bit mind boggling. I got stuck a lot with trying to understand how you could fit another image inside one however I was able to solve this when I saw the arrow inside the FedEX logo. For some reason this example, after already seeing so many, made sense to me and made my mind click. I was able to learn a lot about negative and positive space but the biggest thing that stuck out to me was that their can both be used to your advantage if you know how too and by knowing how to use them it can change the way you design/create a image or logo.

The task was to create an rubber stamp that described you as a person, now this might seem like an easy task but in reality it was the exact opposite. For me personally , I would consider myself a variety of things so to dim that down to little was a struggle for me. The fact that also can not draw was another struggle for me.

I started off trying to be very complex. I wanted to  make it different that was when my difficulties started. I had some many things that described and could not choose one, That is when I came up with the idea of combining some of them. Which to lead to my first stamp which was an emoji. A mixture of me being funny and outgoing.  After drawing my image finish it was then  I knew I would have trouble with cutting out the positive and  negative space so decided to go with a second approach. After going back to the drawing board a couple times I decided that I would be simple. I decided I would find a way to do my initials in a creative way. This is my final design as you can see above. The picture above symbolizes me in many ways. When to start of it is my. An I have such connection with this because it was not the name given my birth but I  identify with this more than the one given to me.

Both positive and negative space was very important when designing my stamp. I wanted to make my stamp visually interesting and made sure something stood out so I cut out certain parts that connect my initials. Instead of making one of my letters positive and the other negative I thought it would be best if both were positive so it has some type of unison to it.

Final Stamp Design

My Final Stamp Print
My Final Stamp Print
To first start off I originally had a overall layout of how my stamp would preferably look like. Then we had the assignment to make a list of words that described us in the best way. The assignment really changed the meaning of my stamp, tremendously. I was first going to write my name in a type of font and put things around it, but then I realized there is one overall thing that I am about. That is cooking and the word that stood out for that was "skillful". So I tweaked my whole stamp and dumbed it down to a chef's hat with my initials on each side of it. I now believe that this is something I could have for my own future business I wish to build from the ground and up.
The assignment was to create a printmaking stamp through positive and negative space. The final design, after I decided to not do the one before that, was brought up to show how clear my vision of me will be in the future.
The importance of negative and positive space is to show how a focus of a drawing can be complemented with a single or more background in a picture. In my drawing the complement of the background space suits it well and leaves a wide range of thought to the stamp itself.
Understanding the principles of this type of art is truly significant to all other art, I see now. If a or multiple focus and background are present the picture is showing negative and positive space. I got stuck around making sure my stamp didn't look my vision I intended. I learned to make sure your art looks like how you want it to, so your vision isn't confused with something that you dislike or didn't want. This can go far in the art world of negative and positive printmaking.

This stamp represents me because my stamp symbols talking out and speaking against controversial causes. My final design idea I just thought and said "What represents me?" and I feel like this represents myself. I brainstormed caring, smart, hard working, conscious. I picked a word of speaking out. When I was in 7th grade I went to a public speaking class and you never hid your opinions and that represented me. The importance of positive and negative space is important because when the symbol is opening its mouth it blends with the background. I got stuck doing this project with symbol ideas I constantly kept throwing away numerous amount of paper. I solved it by getting extra help and looking at examples . I learned that positive and negative space is a effective way to express art in a different way.

Final Stamp Design

The smiley face and the frowny face are both part of a venn diagram, which symbolizes the concept of finding the middle path, or accepting what is while accepting what needs to change. The pencil represents my love of art, as well as writing (which is also an art). The thought bubble represents my philosophical side, and how my mind is constantly going at 100 mph (This is where the exclamation point comes into play). The rainbow is a display of my extreme gayness. And then there are some hidden secrets to this design, that you will only understand if you know me quite well.  I had to draw this out multiple times, and get past the grueling criticism of my friends, before deciding on this design. First, I had to come up with a list of ten words that describe me. This seemed a daunting task at the start, but I quickly wrote down over 15 words. Then, I was faced with the instruction to narrow down the list to three. This was where I handed the computer with my list on it to a close friend, who proceeded to highlight the qualities on the list that best describe me. Positive and negative space play an important role in my design, because of the distinction between the image and its background. I got really stuck with trying to have the confidence to include a few specific symbols on here. And I got really really stuck with how to turn the image into positives and negatives. The words I originally used were: Creative, Emotional, Philosophical, Hyper, Cringeworthy, Queer in all meanings of the word, Activist, Flawed, Extreme, Goofy, Impulsive, and Intelligent. All of these ended up incorporated into the design somehow.

Final Stamp Design

negativeandpositive
This symbolizes me in many ways. First is that it is my initials N-Naseem A-Awni H-Hameid. The word that is spells out, "N.A.H", also symbolizes me because my grandfather always told me "Not a hesitation". The way it is messed up and not neat is very special too, because in my mind nothing is perfect.
The place that I mostly got stuck at is knowing where to cut it out because I was not there for a lot of the classes so, I had no idea what negative and positive space and where to cut out my stamp. So in the process of drawing it I was given a mini lesson from my different classmates. If I had more time to I would edit it a lot more.

Stamp cut out

Posted by Joziah Matos in Art - Freshman · Hull · c2 Band on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 9:04 pm

For the pass 4 class periods in art, We were given a task to create a stamp that represents me. My own symbol that everybody can see and know that its mine. We first started with a sketch. My first idea represented me the most because it related back to the thing i love music. So i made an MPC with a hawaiian print behind it. It was a good design up until i realised that i couldn't use it. It wasn't a good design to be cut out into negative space. I then decided to make an old 60s style TV. Why? because i like old fashioned stuff and my first album had an "old look" to it. I started designing and came up with a perfect concept of where the positive and negative space was going to be. After i figured that out, i continued to cut it out on the last day and put it on paper. overall, i like the way my stamp came out. I feel like i did exactly what the objective was and describe myself in an image. And because of the thought and work i put into it, it all came together and made a art piece i love.

Final Stamp

Posted by Edwin Ortiz in Art - Freshman · Hull · c2 Band on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 9:00 pm

When I first started brain storming ideas for mt stamp I really focused on myself and thought of ways that I could be in my stamp. My first design were my initials over lapping but the problem was that stamp the way the lines intersected couldn't be cut out in perfect positive or negative space. There were always odd lines that didn't look right and would come in and out of positive and negative space. Back to the drawing board I went.
I thought of what something that I could do that showed who I am but wasn't to difficult to be made into positive or negative space. I searched images and there was a picture of a skyline. i immediately knew that the skyline had to be in my design, it represented my home.
Positive and negative space was very important when designing my stamp. I first started drawing the sky line itself and decided that would be the positive space of my stamp but when I looked at it, it was very plain and boring. I decided to write philly but in negative space so that it would be an actual part of the sky line and not some separate piece. i wanted to make my stamp visually interesting.
