Negative Drawing and Cutout

Posted by Indee Phillpotts in Art - Freshman - Hull - b2 on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 8:20 pm

Negative space is the empty space around an object or the objects surroundings.  It allows the eye to see the main part of the drawing.

In my cut out, I found the negative space by cutting out the pieces that were shaded in darker and using that on the left side of the page so that the blue would be the focus and the black paper was the negative space.  For the other side I did the complete opposite by cutting out the other part and then using the blue as the negative space.  For the stool drawing, I drew the still life first and then colored in all the space around it.

It helps an artist to use negative space because it makes their illustrations more accurate.  It also allows artist to focus themselves and their drawings.

Negative space is useful in creating art because it makes your drawings more precise and accurate.  It also allows you to see what you’re doing in a different way.

Negative space is the negative or empty space around the object. In the cutout project, you could find negative space with the tan (the left) surrounding the pink and the pink space (right) surrounding the tan. Because of the negative space, you could really tell what the picture is supposed to be, a tree. It just stands out more because of the negative space and with the colors contrasting it. In the stool drawing, the negative space is the shaded area. Negative space is important because it really gives effect to what your picture is.

A. Negative space is the empty space around the subject of a drawing or photo. The negative space is just as important as the subject because the negative space can make the subject stand out more.

B. I found the negative space in the cutout with the base paper after I cut out the traced template that was in another color. I found the negative space in the still-life when I was drawing only the outside lines of the objects and shading in the empty spaces.

C. I helps an artist see in negative space because the negative space defines the subject of the drawing or photo. Without paying attention to negative space, the subject could just blend into the background.

D. Negative space is helpful in creating art because the negative space like explained in the previous question, makes the subject stand out and the negative space can make the drawing more interesting.

  • A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
Negative space is the space inside a picture that is not in the main object of that picture so Its basically the rest of the paper that isn't taking up by the picture that was actually drawn.

  • B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?
First the cut out I found the negative space by cutting out the template and and used that to trace it on another piece of paper so that all of the space surrounding the drawing becomes the negative space and then when it comes times to do the other side just reverse and what was white becomes black and what was black becomes white.
  • C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It allows said artist to be more precise in the drawing and that make the picture that much better.

  • D. How is negative space useful in creating art?
Well first of all like I said in the question before this it makes the art that more precise and sharp thus making the art look better but it also helps by adding a creative aspect to it all making the picture interesting to look at.

Negative space is the empty space around the subject, the thing being drawn.  Negative space is used to draw attention to the subject.

To find the negative space in my cut out I looked at the spaces around the tree and I cut those pieces out first. When I pasted them on to a piece of paper then you could see the subject. To find the negative space in the stool drawing I just drew the negative spaces that were empty and had no important things in it and colored those spaces in. Eventually, once all the negative spaces were drawn and colored in, I could see the subject.

It helps the artist to see in negative space because it helps them draw their subject more accurately. It also helps them see flaws in their art. When they can do this they can make their art more detailed and accurate.

Negative space is useful in creating art because it helps it become more balanced and pleasing.  Negative space also helps when you have to design something difficult. If you just pay attention to negative space and draw that the final product seems more polished and pleasing.

1.Negative space is the empty space around a drawing. That can help the viewer see the main subject of the drawing.

2.Negative space can be useful because it can help balance the composition and also allow the main drawing to stand out more depending on the negative space.

3.By using negative space in photography it can help balance the composition because to much negative space and it can be overpowering and to little negative space can ruin a picture making it dull or not nice to look at.

4.The best way to take advantage of negative space would be to use it in photography get a color like white and take a picture with an object that has more bright colors this can draw great contrast and bring the viewers attention to the main subject more.

  • A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

A negative space drawing uses the dark or black part of pictures to form shapes that we can recognize.

  • B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

    1. I found it by first pasting one side of the template, and then using what was rest to make the borders for the negative space: The part where I cut out the wings, became, the wings on the other side by "shaping" negative space

    2. I first shaded in the entire page, and then made the shapes by "drawing" with the eraser.

  • C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps with finding a way to give depth to an object, without giving it any details besides the black and white.

  • D. How is negative space useful in creating art?

It allows a person to draw an object without having to make every detail perfect,

Negative Space/Cut-Out Reflection

Cut out
1. Negative space is the free space that surrounds the drawing. The negative space helps reveal the drawing, so the drawing don't have to be drawn for you to see the drawing; the negative space can help you sketch it out.

2. The negative space is found in my cut out because the right side of the drawing was made by the space around the original picture. On the other hand, negative space is in my negative space drawing because I drew the picture by coloring in the positive space around it.

3. It helps the artists by seeing negative space because it gives them another prospective to improve their drawing on. In some cases, it also give them a wider vision of their drawing.

4. For different types of art there are different ways of how negative space can be useful. For example, if you are trying to make a brain-teaser painting/drawing, you would most likely use negative space because the details of the drawing is not needed and you can see the general outline of your drawing, so it is easier to edit.

  • A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
Negative space is the area or background around the main subject of an image. It can be black or white space, but it can also be the actual background, like a forest or the ocean. It highlights the main subject of the image, and brings the viewer's attention and vision where it is supposed to be. It can also balance out pictures, making them have the right amount of background to go with the subject.

  • B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?
In the cut out, the color that wasn't making the owl was the negative space (right: pink, left: blue), and in the stool drawing, the negative space was the penciled in parts, or the parts drawn in. They weren't the main subject, and helped differentiate between subject and not subject.

  • C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
Artists can use negative space to highlight parts of their images, as well as make sure the viewer is looking at the right stuff.

  • D. How is negative space useful in creating art?
Negative space can be used in many creative ways. Rather than coloring in what you want the viewer to see, you can color in the stuff that you want the viewer not to focus on. Negative space can also be used to highlight special colors or affects, and therefore bring out the creative stuff.

Final Perspective drawing

Posted by Indee Phillpotts in Art - Freshman - Hull - b2 on Friday, May 2, 2014 at 8:48 am

One new thing that I learned was that when you draw something like a window or any object, you have to make the part going farther back smaller or at a slight angle because things that are farther away, are smaller.   This made my drawings better because they looked more realistic.  If everything was the same size it wouldn't be or look visually correct.

If I did this assignment again I think one thing I would do differently is give myself more time outside of class to work on this project so that at the end of the project and during the class periods I wasn't as stressed.  It would also help me from rushing through the project.

My advice for someone who has never done a one point perspective drawing is to always have an eraser and a ruler on hand, because they will be used a lot.  I would also just tell them to not get

stressed out when they mess up because you can just erase it and do it again.

One of the most helpful resources for me was the slide deck that Ms.Hull made and my eraser.  Sometimes it was hard to figure out what to do next so the slide deck was a big help. There was so many times that I messed up because the lines weren't straight or they weren't the same distance apart, so my eraser was extremely useful.
